This A-wing has been sculpted by a friend of mine, and I thought it deserved to be showcased on the RPF (he isn't currently a member!)
Basically it was sort of done to go along with the current range of fine molds kits (seeing as how they don't seem to be doing much at the moment for the 1/72 range!!)
We did alot of research on this and we reckon it's pretty spot-on accurate when it comes to the level of detailing.
The size was the tricky thing; there has/is much debate on this and what was decided on was to cross reference the rebel hanger pictures, interior live action shots, and the actual size of the ww1 pilot inside the studio model. I think it worked out at 6.9 meters (rather than the 'official' 9.6 meters) but i'm sure you'll all have something to say about that!!!!!
He is planning on selling a few kits and if your a member of resin illuminati you can deal with him in person!!!

WOW... that's looking fantastic. Never thought much of the A-Wing... but this looks really well done, with a lot of attention to detail.

Has he done more or plan to do more complimentary kits to the Fine Molds line?

The problem is that this took him about a year to finish, he's kind of "easily distracted"!!!
I think there are a few things he'd like to do, he's definately mentioned a snowspeeder before, I'll just have to put the pressure on!!!

There are a few of us painting these at work, and he's doing a lit one (the reason why the console and engine inserts are clear resin) so I'll post pictures when they're done!

I got my new 1/72 A-wing kit in the mail today. I'm in the US, and it took about a week to get here from the UK - not bad at all. Looking it over, all I can say is - WOW. This is an awfully nice little kit. I won't bother posting pics, because you see those pics of the master up top? Thats exactly what the kit looks like. It's maybe 10% smaller than the FP kit, but that's fine with me, I feel the A-wing was meant to be a very small ship. Detailing is very sharp (think Fine Molds or Hasegawa injection kit looking), and the panel lines are very fine and suitably subtle for the scale. There's one little area on the side of the fuselage where I might have to re-scribe after cleaning up the parting line, but overall the casting quality is excellent, bubble-free and no significant mold mis-matches.

The canopy is crystal-clear resin, and looks like an injection-molded part. The engine grilles and instrument panel are also molded in clear, so the more ambitious of you out there could light it if you like. The tiny pilot is fantastic, very sharply detailed and appears "true" 1/72 scale. The kit even includes two spares for the thin "targeting lasers" that go alongside the main cannons, in case you break or lose one (or two). No decals are included, but I'm sure I can find some suitable ejector-seat triangles in my spares box.

I'm not an expert on the A-wing, but comparing the kit to my reference photos, accuracy appears to be very good. I love the tiny simulated button-head screws everywhere. I also haven't built it up yet, so I can't comment on fit, but given how nice the castings look I'm expecting a quick build. This one will jump to the head of the line once I've cleared a couple of my current projects off the workbench. Overall, I couldn't be happier with this little guy, and it will look great next to its natural enemy, the Fine Molds TIE Interceptor. Now if only someone would do a 1/72 B-wing this nice...

WOW... that's cool. Yeah, the detailing looked super sweet on the master... nice to hear it transferred to the kits.

Can't wait to see one painted up. :thumbsup

Hi All
Finally got my copy painted! I decided to go for a colour scheme based on the Ralph Mcquarrie concept art because I figured everyone else would do the studio model colour scheme (though I think I might do one of these in the future !!)
This is a fantastic model to paint, and to be honest (though I am slightly biased) I reckon that even if fine molds get around to doing an a-wing in 1/72, this one will still be more finely detailed!

Very nice looking.

Didn't Fine Molds recently announce an upcoming A-wing?

I'm pretty sure the next up from Fine Molds is a 1:48 snowspeeder (possibly a 2 pack?).

I have one of the little A-wings coming my way. I can't wait. From the pics, it looks near Fine Molds quality.

Minifig, are you still producing these? I'm looking to add to my 1/72 scale ship lineup!! And the A-wing's one of my peronal fav's!!!

What an awesome paint job.

Does your friend have any other 72nd scale kits in the planning? I ask since FineMolds seems to have switched to larger kits and completely ignoring this scale. :cry

Hotshot- I think RB26 is still selling these, but you're best to contact him directly through Resin Illuminati, he missed the registration window for the RPF and he's had a bit of trouble getting everyone there castings as fast as he'd like to get them sent (though I think he's pretty much up to date now)!!!!!!!

NoHumorMan- we keep on trying to get him to do something else, He keeps on going on about a speeder bike, but I also know he likes the Naboo fighter!!!! Whatever he decides on I'm sure it'll be 1/72.

I hope we get to see some more of these kits painted soon!

Sweet... but wouldn't a 72nd scale speeder bike be insanely tiny?)

Resin Illuminati is a little more exclusive than some might think. They rejected my registration and would not respond to querries why. I don't know if this is commonplace or if I am one of the few that the admins think is an A-hole (quite possibly the later :confused ). You may want to ask if RB26 would mind if his e-mail is made public. RB26 responded to my e-mail very quickly and his communication by e-mail before and since my order has been more than adequate. I've been very pleased with his business practices.

EDIT: RB26's e-mail has been made public in this thread at SSM: HERE

I got mine in today and it is quite simply astounding. Put it under magnification and it is more astounding. I cannot possibly imagine how it was done. This is Finemolds quality - no exaggeration. It is absolutely one of the finest resin kits that I have ever seen.

I have several 1:48 resin kits and not a single one comes close to this kit. I am holding it right here in my hand and I still don't believe it.

This is going to ruin resin kits for me. The bar has been set at unreachable heights.

I agree with minifig. Finemolds need not bother to make one now. What Finemolds needs to do is give RB26 a job.

I have already e-mailed RB26 to see if I can get another. One is not enough.
