1/700 & 1/350 scale BH Cygnus builds

Yeah far as I know everything coloured is dyed, which is why the coloured options have extra handling and an additional verification step for files

You are correct Nwerke. This is the reply I got from SW regarding the Black printing:
---
Dear Paul,
Yes, that is true. All plastic models are first printed in white, then dyed in black. If you can't get Dave to allow the parts to be printed in Black, you can order them in White and dye them yourself using acrylic paint or a standard fabric dye. Thanks for understanding.

It would be very very easy to do yourself. The stuff absorbs paint like a sponge, so dye would wick right up too I'm sure. As I see it, though, there's very little incentive. The stuff absorbs paint like a sponge. :)

Thanks a lot for all your feedback and help! I am convinced and will be placing my order next pay. SW has confirmed that all of Dave's parts in his store are valid and ready to print and now that I know white is the only option (and easy to paint) I am ready to go. I've contacted Moffeaton a while back to see if he is offering cutting services for the clear hull and am waiting his reply. Some local places here are asking for different file formats other than PDF but Dave seems to have disappeared. :/

Go for it! You won't be disappointed. :)

Dave gets busy periods at work (as do I; I've barely been around for half of this year) - he's had this before and I'm sure he'll show up.

Agreed. I suspect once he has the front clear box parts he will begin posting progress pics again and hopefully other versions of his templates. :D

Reminds me, I really have to get the lasercut stuff sorted out for mine. Too many projects, arrgh! haha

I got my armature from Pololu, following Dave's suggestion, as I had no provider here in Puerto Rico that would do it for a reasonable price (meaning less than Pololu or with less troubles due to file formats)...his files made it real easy...literally submit the PDF image, chose the materials (plastics, acrylics, etc), chose thickness, await the quote confirmation (24hrs) and place the order...in 5 days I received the shipment...I did a little assembly just to "taste" the look and feel of the shapes, I could not believe how neat they are...like a jigsaw puzzle they fit superbly well, living just enough margin for fine alignments...then everything was re-packed and safely stored...Can't wait until Dave releases the bow file(s) and remaining little pieces... :-D

ALL of them? That's a fair bit of expenditure. I reckon I'll have all mine bought by next spring...

It was expensive but I suspect it will be well worth it. The Cygnus is one of my top 5 Sci-Fi ships and if I had the room I probably would have gone with Nwerke's kit. Either way I am grateful both he and Dave have made these kits available. God, I LOVE living in the future! :D

Re: 1/700 & 1/350 scale BH Cygnus builds

Welcome to the Shapeways experience! :/

I'm slowly uploading parts to Pinshape. Their verification process seems to be tougher than Shapeways; it's much harder to get a successful upload so far. But they're a bit cheaper than the new SW pricing, it could take roughly a grand off the price of my version in total. I haven't tried any orders as yet but I hear their quality is good, so if they are less flakey after you press the button on an order, it'll be win-win. Maybe Dave could upload there too when he's back on board.

PS it's entirely possible that won't be the only part they drop. Even though they have printed it several times before.

Re: 1/700 & 1/350 scale BH Cygnus builds

Checked out the Pinshape. The engines are twice the price of Shapeways but it appears it is for more than one?

It's probably the material choices. I guess you have to wait for Dave to make others available (like WSF).

This really sucks... I have the armature cut in acrylic form Dave's plans and created a spreadsheet to spread the cost our over "waves" and was ready to start ordering parts... but if the darn things are not going to print due to Shapeways Shenanigans.... GRRRR....

Mythshaker - can you let me know what does and does not print? I might be able to scratch the bits that don't...

Thanks,
Jedi Dade

I also ordered in waves...On my orders, the only thing that was repeately problematic were the Tower Center Antennas and the Base Antennas...which I kept re-ordering two of each in WSF, FUD and Metallics...SW would say unprintable one time, then on another order they were too prone to braking in production...After like three orders I was able to get them in in WSF and FUD...FUD is as delicate as glass, the antennas break just by looking at them, but WSF is very nice.

I'm ordering like that, in waves. I've got the tower antenna-Fine ultra detail, without any problems. Everything I'm ordering is WSF though, as Dave said. He's the designer, so in my opinion, he knows best!
Just buy it as it's listed in his shop, it saves any hassle.:)
