1/6 scale Stormtrooper Vinyl Kit

I have never put one of these vinyl kits together before. As far as assembly not much problem. My question is will these stand up to primer and paint? I don't want to melt it. I would use acrylic paints and probably Plastikote primer.

Thanks,

Roy

Acrylic paints will work. Don't use any enamel paints or you will run the risk of the paint never completely drying. Something in the vinyl reacts with enamels.

Same with primers. Never had a problem using laquer based sandable primers.

Hope you don't mind me posting these, but here's a vinyl Rancor I did with just acrylics. The slimey look on the Rancor was done with a spray can of acrylic clearcoat:

If your talking about the 1/6 scale kits by Screamin or Kaiyodo (both use the same mold). they are not true to 1/6 scale. Marmits and Sideshows are more accurate and possible, fun to play with.
The troopers Kaiyodos I bought were built, painted with decals apply (well thats how I got them from eBay, seemed factory perfect, not human). With Screamin, I think you have to paint, built and apply the decals. Maybe the amor is preped with a gloss coat, not sure.

the Trooper kits on Ebay from Thailand/Asia are exact copies of Scremin/Kay but are a bit smaller. bought one not knowing it would be smaller and was kinda pissed about it.

But I bought a 1/6 Kaiyodo back in 2003 for cheap (cause I couldnt afford a marmit at the time) to use the amor on a posiable 12inch gi joe male figure, but the amor wouldnt fit, it was a too small.

So, in 2005 I decided to see it would work on a 1/6 scale CY Girl figure, instead of throwing the amor away. With some mods here and there on both the amor and the figure, it worked out well. Ever since then I gotten two more Kaiyodos. And still keep loooking for more, if the prices are right

I used Acyrlic paint for the red female trooper. Red actually bleeds into the armor.

This one I used Krylon ultra flat black spray can

None of the Kaiyodos come prepainted, these are all bare vinyl. The ones on ebay are resin recast counterfeits! This is why they are smaller. The more you use a subsequent model from previous recasts, the smaller they'll get. There's a lot of shrinkage from certain types of casting materials.

Painting these with regular paints such as,enamel, acrylic enamel,or lacquer won't hurt your model at all! The only reason they say this is because, the vinyl flexes, and if the paint isn't flexable enough - it can crack,or flake away from your figure. Another reason is,if it's too soft, your paint may leave fingerprints in it,or even small indentations when handled.

I built one of these stormtroopers with cheapass wally world paint, and it turned a slight yellow. :angry I have to repaint the shoulder pauldrons again,as the paint I used wasn't all the way cured when I stored it. No big deal - I just popped them off,and removed the paint with mineral spirits. A light touch up with some tinted white from the airbrush, and it's as good as new!

Yes use both an acrylyc paint and primer. You can reinforce the interior with a coat hanger or some wire to insure it does not eventually buckle over time. Vinyl is very soft but is a nice medium to work with. It usually will withstand nice light coats of acryl paint but with heavy layers and any load it will buckle over time. Simple wire inside fixs any chance of buckling!

If you use an enamel primer it could warp the vinyl and make it very prown to buckling. But if you use an acryl primer properly applied you should be fine to use an acryl based paint.

Sorry no pictures of anymore of my vinyl models had to let them go in the name of space. Great jop with some of those troopers guys

With slight mods, you can get one to fit on a male figure. I DID have to make some extensions but it works pretty well.

Getoninja, that's some stellar work there! I like your anime-styled ones the most. One of these days I'm going to give sculpting a try in a style sort of like the Clone Wars program.
