If memory serves correctly wasn't there a 1/12 scale X-wing ILM built? With the popularity of the studio scale x-wing Im surprised no one hasnt scratched one.

I dunno - is the 4 footer 1:12? ILM built it, but it didn't see any screen time after it's sequence was cut from ROTJ.

If the reported 1:24 scale models were ~22" to 23" long, the 1:12 would be about 4' right?

But the ILM biggie never saw screen time did it?

Be careful what you wish for.

I have a four foot Jupiter 2. I nicknamed it the Albatross.

Sounds good. But BIG ships are a pain in the butt. Unless you have lots of space. No pun intended.

If I could afford a 4 foot X-wing, I doubt space would be a problem.

The problem, as it stands, is I can't afford a SS version.

I believe the four footer does appear in ROTJ, as several different fighters. There are several very close fly-bys of X-Wings in the film, and if they had such a big model available they certainly would have used it for such shots.

The shots are very short, though!

Re size - anyone who has seen the four-footer at the displays would probably agree. You'd really want quite a big display area available. It might not sound that huge, but bear in mind that most four-foot spaceship models tend to be linear rockety things. This thing isn't, it occupies a lot of space in all dimensions.

I had started a 1/12th scale x-wing before my tie-bomber (finished very soon by the way) scaling up the smaller 1/24th kit parts and buying kits available double the size and have also started building the engines. I found tube the right size, cut in half and started the framing inside the halves. Evergreen styrene corugated sheet would be used to copy the pattern on the saturn kit parts. Seeing these parts double the size of the saturn5 donor parts is quite amazing and I'm thinkin, man, this is actually goin to be big. I had been thinkin of doin this build when da bomber is complete, my thinkin is start small, hone the skills a bit then wayhay go for it!. I planned to copy exactly the details of the smaller models just scale up but the actual big scale model used very different donor parts that resembled parts of it's smaller brother.
I still think a big x-wing would just be awe inspiring.

I agree. Im aware of at least one shot of the 4 footer. And probably more !

Can someone do a screen capture of the confirmed ROTJ shot of it (the 4 ft Xwing) - I did not think it made it into the film.

Well, that's a pretty good source. :)

But here are some contenders.

I didn't bother correcting proportions or removing black bars. Note that in two shots the camera goes BETWEEN the wings. Well, only the tip of the lens would have to get that far, but I don't know if that would be possible with the standard scale model. The camera shown shooting the DS surface in The Making of Star Wars did not have a lens that protruded outside the large camera housing.

One pic in there,

is what I believe to be an AMC kit used as a pyro. It blows up in the next frame (assuming it wasn't a replacement explosion like many in ROTJ--there are X-wing parts in the debris, though). Look at that wing spread.

That's right, but Lorne said a lot of **** in the SaG book.

I'm not sure what that is supposed to mean. He seems like a great guy, and I was impressed with the amount of detail he does remember. Though, given everything he ever worked on you would think that something would manage to slip in there at somepoint.

Maybe I'll call him and ask.:love

But to get this show back on topic... that X Wing model is quite the sight to behold. It looks as though slide projector lamps were used in the engines.

EDIT: Does anyone have the mega-edition of Sculpting a Galaxy? I'm talking the $200+ job. Was thinking of making the purchase with the tax return.

Sure he's great guy. But when it comes down to it, it was 31-32 years ago. No one can remember ALL the details. You need to cut them some slack and not take everything as gospel. If you get it from several sources, then you're better off.

I have the Mega- SAG book and I think it is terrific- I used to build studio models at Brick Price and Wonderworks (Worked on the Abyss, Michael Jackson's Captain EO and Masters of the Universe) in the late 80's so I am really into this stuff-I would get it if I were you.

Dont get me wrong, Lorne is a very nice guy, I was very pleased to meet him since he's one of my hero (with Tippett, Owyeung, Fulmer, St Amand and the other). He's very friendly and funny. Never tired to speak about Star Wars stuff and always looks like a child when speaking about SFX. And you're right that's awesome how he can remember all this stuff. But, it's normal, you cant remember everything or there are some mistakes in the book (probably they dont come from him but from the guys who edited the book). Another exemple, since you're speaking about the special edition of SaG, you can see on the DVD pics of the Leopold kit while Lorne is commented them. They are presented as archive pics but they actually bought a kit to take pics hehe.

Would this edition be worth the $200 ? I would say no because I cant justify such a difference only for some more pages, a dvd and some goodies. In another hand, most of the pics and vids of the DVD are unknown (at least before this book has been released). The behind the scenes are very interesting. And that's always great to see new star wars stuff when you thought you haven seen all. So the $200 (I think it was even more, $350 ?), that's very high for a book, but for great fans that's very cool stuff. Anyway I dont regret it !

In the book 'Sculpting a Galaxy' by Lorne Peterson he states that the big x-wing was filmed but eventually cut from 'Return of the Jedi' describing it as a lost beauty which this model is.

Woops shoulda read the posts more clearly, this has already been said, still I think it's a hugely impressive model, I would love to see it in person we don't get many travelling 'Star Wars' exhibitions down here in Kiwiland.
