1:1 Regan from The Exorcist bust paintup - FINISHED new eyes

The latest piece I've been working on painting is the lifesize bust of Regan that was produced by Killer Kits.

Paint done:

And hair added, cut and styled, with temporary glass eyes in place, and vintage 1970's flannel nightgown on (it's not accurate, but it's the closest that I've been able to find - and I've been through HUNDREDS of eBay listings):

My wife will of course NEVER go into my prop room now. :lol

It looks a bit off due to the large irises and huge pupils as well as the downward look (only way to show the very top of the iris and make here look more intense/starey), but Tech Optics are on the case and are making custom matched eyes for her at this very moment. Will update when those arrive.

Now, do I add the green vomit running down her chin or not?.... Also not sure about adding eyelashes - she has no eyebrows, but is she meant to have eyelashes? Linda Blair definitely did have in makeup, but I can't quite make out on the pics I have of the hero dummy if it has eyelashes.

Looking good. I'm not a big fan of that sculpt, as I have only seen 1 other finished that looks like her to me. You have done a very good job on this, so maybe it is not the sculpt, but the paintwork that usually ruins this bust for me. I actually have one of those busts on order, but been waiting for a year for it and doubt it'll ever come :(.
I don't know if you want suggestions, but if I may make a few constructive ones.
I think the lips are a bit off, maybe too red and defined on top, sorta looks like she's wearing lipstick.
Also I think she needs more bruising on the face, specially around the cuts.
Grease and mess up the hair a bit more.

I think she needs eyelashes, it looks to me the dummy had them.
I always question if I will add green vomit to my bust when I finish it....still on the fence about it myself. The 1 other of these I like has the vomit, so I'm leaning towards Vomit!
Just my thoughts :)
Very nice work! Looking forward to seeing it with the new eyes!

I wish I had a prop room :cry! It looks great, a killer piece, well done!

Re: 1:1 Regan from The Exorcist bust paintup

I wasn't keen on the sculpt either when I had seen other paintups, but having seen the bust on Google images finished by 3Demonic, I thought it looked awesome. It's pretty much all in the eyes and ensuring she has a fringe. Hence why I'm having Tech Optics make the eyes, to really do them justice. I'm yet to see any bust that actually has the lower teeth in it.

I've been doing my paintup based on images in two of my special effects books - basically two slightly different exposures of this image:

Her hair is much more "normal" here - much less grease than the 3Demonic version.

Will look at paling the top lip a little more and adding a touch more bruising around the scars. That said, I don't want to add too much. These two pics (that I only JUST found) seem to be of the original head (though I think the wig has been replaced - looks lighter to me, and the fringe looks longer) and the bruising looks minimal on it (looks slightly less than on the above image too):

I also can't see any eyelashes on this head.

And I have to have a prop room, cos I'm not allowed any of my stuff anywhere else in the flat!

Re: 1:1 Regan from The Exorcist bust paintup

I've never been sure where that pic you posted came from, but I have used it a lot for reference on my sculpt.
The second 2 pics I have as well, but always thought that was a fan painted head from the Dick Smith molds.
The full head that I once owned had bottom teeth, and I am sculpting them in my sculpt.
This is one of the pics I was talking about as far as the amount of bruising. You can see quite a bit of bruising on the doll and the side of Linda's face.
Either way you have changed my mind about this bust :). Hope I get mine!

Re: 1:1 Regan from The Exorcist bust paintup

There is a full page photo of the image I posted featured in "Behind the Mask: The Secrets of Hollywood's Monster Makers" in the section on The Exorcist, crediting it as the dummy used for the head turning sequence. It is also featured in "Dick Smith's Do-It-Yourself Monster Make-up Handbook" as an effects dummy.

It is odd though that it is wearing a completely different nightgown from her "main" one - that you posted in the Linda-with-dummy pic (though she changes her nightgown a LOT in the movie).

Seems to be this nightgown:

Looking forward to seeing your sculpt finished. :thumbsup

Re: 1:1 Regan from The Exorcist bust paintup

Yes! That definitely looks like the same Nightgown in the pic from the movie. I Love that picture of her...I know that sounds weird, but I do :)
You definitely have an eye for Regan and have done your research. Did you do that entirely by hand, with no airbrush? I am very interested in seeing how the eyes turn out. Please keep us up to date when you get them. :)

Re: 1:1 Regan from The Exorcist bust paintup

Yeah, I don't own an airbrush, so all of my busts are painted using paintbrushes.

OK, it's not entirely obvious from this photo, but I've punched up the bruising a bit more and have paled down and blended the top lip more. Also decided to do something a little different with the glass eyes until the proper ones arrive.

Bloody hell thats freaky lol.
I really like the white eyes. Id be tempted to have the bust so you can change the eyes out as and when.

Awesome paint up .

Definitely. I've just started taking commisions (and will paint for trades), so feel free to drop me a line when you're done. :thumbsup

That's a nice head Corkster. Is that the lower teeth I can see, or is it resin goobers? I think I saw a full head sold in the Junkyard here YEARS ago, but have never seen another since. Your 3/4 head looks like one of the nicest I've seen - all of the other "lifecast" versions of this I've seen have softer details and are missing the lower teeth.

Re: 1:1 Regan from The Exorcist bust paintup

I have the same lifecast sitting in a box in storage somewhere.
It might of been my Regan full head you remember seeing. It took me years to acquire it and wish I never would of sold it...but times were tough for awhile :/
Here it is:

Re: 1:1 Regan from The Exorcist bust paintup

Yeah, most likely it was that one. I'd love to add one of those to my collection.

I've decided that the hair is annoying me. The hair on the wig I used had waves/kinks along each strand, so it's just not sitting properly or clumping together right, especially at the bottom. Just ordered a different one, in a lighter colour this time too, so will be replacing it when that arrives.

Re: 1:1 Regan from The Exorcist bust paintup

It's the lower teeth btw your paintbrushes work looks very cool, Howlrunner. Yes, it's same lifecast, syborwolf. I'm trying to find acrylic eyes of her. Does you guys have any idea?

Borrowed my daughter's Rapunzel wig, just for fun. ;)

Re: 1:1 Regan from The Exorcist bust paintup

The main things you need to do to make her look better would be to add light brown washes to the teeth to stop them looking so white and to blend the edges of the lips. :thumbsup

Finally got the custom eyes through from Tech Optics, so Regan is now DONE. These were painted to match screencaps and images of the Dick Smith puppet that I supplied, so they're REALLY nice and accurate. I also added individual eyelashes.
