Today I have started to work on the main feet.

That's were I am so far :

I built it of my own design, since it won't support any load, I built it from 2mm styrene. The side plate can be removed :

I'm planning to use aluminium motor holders. I bought some from a member some times ago, I'm going to modify them (they came with pancake motors, belts and 2 wheels per foot. I think I'm going to use Jaycar motors with one wheel and a caster).

Yeah it yellowed mainly where I ran the glue hence the yellow in the panel lines !

That makes sense. I thought the plastic was yellowing. Just like my AA helmet.

Yeah you're right the whole styrene has started to yellowed but more in some place (look at the bottom of the shoulder !! I dont know why !) and the glue didnt help against UV !

I love this build, I have been wanting to build an R2 for a couple months but had no idea where to start, this has inspired me to do it now. I have been searching for styrene suppliers in Canada(specifically Ontario) but I am having no luck. Where did you get yours from? I'm assuming in comes in bigger sheets like 4'x8' ? About how much did this build cost you in materials?

I found out my dad can order styrene through his work which is good, saves me shipping fees, I'm curious how much material you need for this project, I can get various sizes in 3mm, I was thinking getting 2 4'x6', I figured that would be enough, with a little extra incase of an mess up. Was there anything else other than the frame that was styrene(hand made, not parts like the dome)?

If you join Astromech.net there are plans there to build an R2 from styrene. Pretty much every part is made. I can't remember exactly parts you need to get to finish it though. The plans are for an R5-D4. The whole droid weighed around 35 lbs. Have a look. If you have the time and the tools it's very doable. And the cheapest way too.

If you can get 3 4'x6' 3mm styrene sheet, that would be enough I think

Then you have the option to cut your own skin (inner and outer) from 1 mm sheet. You can also bought some pre-scored for cheap from Chani on astromech.net (mines come from her, saved a lot of time ! ).

You can built pretty much everything from styrene but you can also buy aluminium (expensive but beautiful) or resin detail parts. You can turn resin to gold, uh, aluminium, with some extra work !

You can buy a styrene dome (inner and outer), laser cut, however there is no current run as the guys are doing a run of aluminium dome right now.

If you want to build your dome from scratch (styrene), you can build an R4, R5 (or even an R6 but non-canon) head. These ones can be made from styrene sheet and they look pretty cool !

Hello guys,

I decided to go another way for the dome

I sanded it and used rub'n buff instead of paint. I dont want a shiny/polished finish but a rough aluminium look and this stuff is perfect for that !

I used a scotch brite pad to get this rough finish because it was a bit too shiny to my taste

I only used rub'n buff on my LDP (which is wood) and on the radar eye.

I'm quite happy with the result, of course the dome will be weathered once the whole droid is painted !
