EDIT 10/5/07 - New Pics Posted On Page 6...:)

Afternoon everyone…

After months of work, one of my dream projects is about to really kick into high gear, and I thought I would finally share it with the rest of you…

For years I would joke with friends about wanting a full-scale landspeeder to drive around at special events. And when I would see the replicas that others had built, it would make me want one even more. Well, last summer I was finally able to convince some friends of mine to step up and help me make that dream a reality…

After making numerous research trips to the COSI exhibit up in Ohio, work began last summer on a new master that would then be recreated in hand-laid fiberglass.

Since many of the other replicas that I’ve seen end up looking too big and thick IMHO, I was adamant that we take our time and make ours as close as possible to the original filming props…(which were actually much smaller than you would think)

Almost a year later, and I think the results speak for themselves...

We still need to finish up the engines and the windshield, but that will happen pretty soon.

I should be receiving the fiberglass body in a couple of weeks, at which time I plan on painting it up and mounting it to a 3-wheel electric golf cart chassis. My tentative goal is to have it ready for the grand opening of the traveling Star Wars exhibit that will open here in Fort Worth in June.

Anyhow…Take a look at these pics and let me know what you think.

Jason

You could put your legs through the bottom and run around Flintstone stylee.

Looking forward to the paint job.

Great job! This is a project I have wanted to do for a long time! I am glad that someone has stepped up and done it :)

Best looking Landspeeder I've ever seen!! The shape looks spot on. You're right about some other ones looking too fat or too short...Keep us updated with pics.

is this "lanspeeder" from some movie?

Hi...Well, I know of one movie that it was seen in ;)

If you're asking whether this was built for a fan film, or something like that, the answer would be no...It was totally done as a "wonder if we could do this" kind of thing...

Basicallly it is so those of us that were involved in the project can have one for ourselves.

Wow, it looks great!

Do you have any info on the exhibit?

Thanks
Brian

Sure...

This is the same exhibit that was in Boston, Columbus, and is now in Los Angeles...From what I've been told the only difference will be that Fort Worth will not be getting the full size Millenium Falcon Cockpit due to space constraints.

But the real speeder will be there...So it will be interesting to see just how close we got to it.

What was the body made of? I know that now it is fiberglass I was just curious what you originally carved from?

Very nice indeed. Looks sleeker... less chunky than the last replica I saw.

You might want to get a Derwent flame tube for the exposed engine!

Thanks for all the positive comments...I just wish that I could take all the credit for the quality of the sculpt.

The master was built out of MDF...Foam was then placed in all the curved areas, and sculpted to shape...After that the whole thing was covered with standard texture mud and sanded smooth...Finally, the master was finished off with several layers of a high-grade automotive primer/sealer and wet sanded until it was pretty much perfect.

Kurtyboy...I would LOVE to have a derwent for the exposed engine (as well as the nozzles on the back of all three engines)...Problem is that I cannot afford to pay top dollar for one.

Maybe someone would be allow us to recast their flame tube for the project...Or perhaps someone might have an old junked one that we could get cheap. ;)

If anyone has any leads in that department, please let me know...

OK...So now I have a lead on a Derwent :D (thanks Kurtyboy)

I guess the next quest is to find out what the heck these are:

Anyone have a remote idea what it might be?

I'm sure I could find something that's close, or maybe scratch build something based on the pics...But it would be really cool to source the original part.

Any help is most appreciated...

speeder

What an amazing job you guys did!:eek
Do you think you might offer the fiberglass body to those willing to come pick it up? Sorta like kit and pick up only deal? I've always wanted a landspeeder of my own.:)
