You can buy mdf boomerang blanks from most art stores. Check online.

Alginate would be a good choice. Personally I like using chalking silicone thinned with naptha. I've done a full head mold for less than $20 using this method. Check out stiltbeaststudios on youtube and he has a tutorial on how to do it. It is great method for cheap molds.
