Honestly I think the second step should be a duct tape mannequin of yourself.. why?? so you can work on your costume and get everything to your liking and use it to display your costume once it's done
being a big guy myself and having done a similar costume (at-at driver) I would say see if you can get it to sit up a bit higher. if not a good solution maybe to make a set of proper sized armor via pepakura.

honestly Disguise Costumes are about the same quality as Rubies Costumes.. So they are good for a quick childs halloween costume and a few other pieces that can be used as a base point to start from..
You could also use one of the radio shack amplifiers..
