with sculpy, I highly recommend that you wash it and then prime before painting, use your paint of choice, spray is preferable for an even coat since you don't have a sprayer. once paint is dry clear coat with multiple thin coats of polyurethane if your looking for a nice glossy look. It seals...

Re: Can you make an armor piece just out of apoxie sculpt/magic sculpt or premo sculp sculpy is probably strong enough to make a good mold out of, when baked it's heavy kinda like concrete or plaster or paris only stronger. for your necks sake, I don't recommend wearing it on your head.

Re: Discovered a second layer on screen used Snowtrooper helmet cowl from the photo you posted I would say it looks like pleather. It also looks like they glued 2 pieces together to get the desired thickness and stiffness that they were looking for. good luck on your build.
