    Didya ever wonder...?

Okay, another didja wonder... Who or what was Mister Shadow in "The Fifth Element"? I've never understood the idea of any entity which seeks to destroy everything. You might have a being that seeks revenge off a population for some (real or imagined) slight, but I've never understood the...

    Didya ever wonder...?

I never bought into the "you can't have light without dark" shtick that screen writers love to put to paper. You're just justifying how the good guys can't win out for a long timeframe.

    Didya ever wonder...?

Good points. I also never got how there could only be two Jedi left in all the Galaxy, both right in the very heart of the Jedi HQ? It'd made more sense to later on acknowledge there were a couple of Jedi in some outlying area where the order never got to the Imperial troops, or that they were...

    Didya ever wonder...?

Yeah, but that means all these ladder climbers went their entire careers without making another attempt. Most likely, they'd get someone they were grooming later in their careers, so if it went wrong, they could blame the new guy/gal, and if it went right, the older and more cunning exec would...

    Didya ever wonder...?

A few things I always wondered about sci-fi movies: How come almost no sci-fi soldier ever carried food, water or even bag for extra items? In Dune, the entire house Atreides left Caladan to run Arrakis. After they got wiped out and the remaining people clearly never were coming back, whatever...

New NBC streaming Battlestar Galactica reboot

Thanks for that, I used to argue with people that I was sure I'd seen it (the comic adaptation has Baltar being executed as well), but I never could find confirmation of it in the pre-internet era. Frankly, I'd long ago forgotten all about it until just now...

New NBC streaming Battlestar Galactica reboot

Reboot of a reboot. How meta. The reboot, at first, was good as I could accept this was a real military organization for the most part. They treated is as a real aircraft carrier in space. But eventually, it started crumbling apart. If they could have it during the Cylon war, you could have that...

Things you're tired of seeing in movies

Yep. I was trying to run a service detachment in 1st Gp but my CO wouldn't let me go at the time (I often wonder how my life would be different if he'd allowed me to go over) and prior to 9/11, they were only there to give assistance to the locals and help them defeat their collective enemies...

Things you're tired of seeing in movies

Funny you'd mention this. One of my soldiers when I was active duty was in Desert Storm, and he said they were clearing what seemed to be an abandoned trench line, so they could set up for the night. Some Iraqi solider came out with an AK, gave a few US soldiers the "mano e mano" look, tossed...

Things you're tired of seeing in movies

People who don't have to worry about the law at all and do literally anything they want (up to destruction of property and murder). My wife likes the "Yellowstone" series and while I like it somewhat, I can't get past the fact this family can do anything and there's never any legal ramifications...

Things you're tired of seeing in movies

So true. I grew up in North Florida, which has more lightning than almost anywhere on earth. Every storm we had came with it. Movies hardly ever get it right. They also never have the people reacting to the lighting or the thunder at all.

Things you're tired of seeing in movies

Yeah, the turrets are too big for a T-34 hull and too far forward. Same issue with the "Saving Private Ryan" ones, they did the same thing. Oddly, a T-55 conversion was suggested and shot down. That would have made for a far better looking Tiger, as that hull would be quite close in size and the...

Things you're tired of seeing in movies

Those were T-34s, previously mockup up for another movie and already on hand in Yugoslavia when the production company came along. Quite frankly, they were the best mocked up German tanks seen in any movie for decades. Most armor nuts concede that at least they tried and didn't use stock T-34s...

Things you're tired of seeing in movies

Agreed. Sure, its got some things that aren't right (a hippie in the 40s, all the civilians dressed in obvious postwar clothes and hairstyles, a Belgian BAR, those odd leather magazine pouches, M-44 packs, etc) but it's a very impressive movie for its scope and all the things they got right. And...

    Top Gun: Maverick

Any of you ever SAT in a bf-109? You can barely even turn your head around in the cockpit. It's got horrible visibility. In a Mustang, you have an excellent field of view. And yes, I've sat in the former and flown in the latter.
