The pointy part of the dial is called a gnomon. When the compass was aligned for the correct hemisphere pole, where its shadow on the dial was your time

I've brought one of those sound activate dancing coke cans to see if it can be done with one of those. Its an old one that the owner lost the glasses and headset on. Only downside is that the mechanism is pretty loud.
