Race doesn't really come up in Discovery, not like in DS9, but they do have a lot of LGBT characters but they don't really dwell on it directly. Discovery's problem is the inappropriate emotional heart to hearts during ticking clock scenes, and the inability to land the climax of season arcs.
my suggestion would be to paint the stars in black, but in a different sheen than the base black. that way you will only see them when the light hits it just right.
Otoy already did a preliminary 3D scan. I believe they have plans to do a formal one with their fancy imaging chamber, I assume before any restoration takes place.

Obviously, no one in the know can share the whole story, but in your opinion, had the ship not appeared on ebay, do you think the result is everyone else finds out about it "today" when Rod makes the big announcement that it has been found and authenticated?
He worked on the TOS movies 4-6 as well, as I'm sure you know. Better them than many other choices. And they did the best they could with time and budget they had for TOS remastered.
