Life Size 1:1 REAL METAL Machined General Greivous

Again, one needs the parts first. You can't just scan a toy or something and blow it up and expect it to look good. Even if there were a lifesized statue somewhere chances are it would not be accurate like we'd want it. Rapid prototyped parts are relatively fragile, plus they come out rough...

Life Size 1:1 REAL METAL Machined General Greivous

you have to have something to scan first.

Life Size 1:1 REAL METAL Machined General Greivous

I have an idea. How about 3D CAD design of each piece individually, then rapid-prototype each piece, then mold from there (after cleanup of course... lesson learned from the halo pistols :)). This would be faster (though not cheaper, but worth it IMHO) than hand sculpting each piece by hand...

Life Size 1:1 REAL METAL Machined General Greivous

Having some experience in CNC projects, I can assure you resin would be WAY cheaper. Silicone for molds and dozens of buckets of resin, though expensive in their own right, do not compare to the prices of CNC design drawing and machining costs. Especially on a limited run project like this...

Found! Obi-Wan Kenobi ANH Lightsaber Emitter

But surely some of the pieces on the original part are stamped, at least the ring of holes, right? For our replica purposes machining the whole part would be tons cheaper.

Found! Obi-Wan Kenobi ANH Lightsaber Emitter

One... more... piece :) On attachment- notice in Chris's "revelation" pictures, there is a gob of something on the bottom part of the interconnectior (not the emitter, the piece between the grenade and emitter), just below the last ring of the emitter. This is probably a (very) sloppy tack...

Han Solo ANH Hero Blaster Flash Hider *FOUND*

In my opinion, blued steel is the only way to go for the metal replicas :) Assuming of course that's what the original is, but I can't imagine it being anything different.

Found! Obi-Wan Kenobi ANH Lightsaber Emitter

Holy moly. I remember when we all thought the OWK grenade was a motorcycle grip. Let's not get TOO excited though, all this excitement is still based on one man's recollection of what the part looks like (serafino's contact). Although that cutaway drawing looks pretty convincing. And a...

Han Solo ANH Hero Blaster Flash Hider *FOUND*

MG81Z, these don't have flash hiders. Perhaps the "Z" designation did not have them? (edit: did a little research and found that the "Z" designation means two MG81s were attached together with a single trigger, so the "Z" should have no effect on flash hider significance) Nonetheless, the...

Han Solo ANH Hero Blaster Flash Hider *FOUND*

Here's another MG81 pic: note that most of the MG81s do not have flash hiders... probably because there's not much need for one on an airplane.

    General questions about metal lathes

As long as we're on CNC prices, one of my relatives has several machines that cost in the neighborhood (and upwards of) $250,000 each. And he is a private business working out of a shop on his property But I'm not pretending to know much about machining, I'm still a beginner compared to...
