I've found a couple of canvas materials I liked for it, but they were white. I'm not sure how well dye would take to it, the red wouldn't be a problem because it is a small amount, but the blue would be a lot of dyeing and I don't know if it would be consistent throughout.

Maybe you could use something as simple as paper mache and then bondo over that for strength and a working detail space.

Maybe the oil based paint isn't letting anything else stick to it. I remember my mom used to have this craft paint that had a 'crackling effect' when layered. It could be something similar. No true idea, just a thought...hope you get it figured out!

Quick question for you...how did you attach the buckles? Are they set into the bondo or are they adhered separately? Very nice work, btw!
