Finished sanding the part, attached it, and matched the paint scheme to the rest of the rifle. Once fully cured I'll mask it off and spray the black grip.

This part is coming together nicely.

First sanding pass at the grip, and second layer of wood filler.

First coat of paint. This is darker than the final paint will be. But it adds a nice depth to the final finish. Also started working on the barrel hand grip. (Edit: latest weight comes in at 983g - so I am going to be not far off my original estimate of over 1kg once finished).

First coats of grey primer and matt black added. Unfortunately over sprayed in a couple of places so need to give it a few days curing time before sanding back a little. But it's starting to come together.

Did a little more etching to the barrel. Decided to use up the last of a black matt spray can to see what it will look like without much further work. Was rather happy that very little will need to be done (as the matt black hides a lot of the small imperfections).

That the exact same paints and technique I used LOL! It really comes out close to the original paint colour. I had the same issues with the thumb pad on mine too - but thankfully I was at a stage where I could redo it with a matt finish (I made sure not to use gloss lacquer on that bit). Only...

Thanks - unfortunately the weather is too cold to do much at the moment, so it's sitting on my self waiting for some better weather so i can sand outside.

While not as large, these show the colours better. It's clear the body was a mixture of an steel/iron colour, but with a lot of rusting - making them almost all bronze or copper looking. The bits that attach the spike to the body are brass / gold - with the spikes themselves looking more...

I think you're right - and given the shape of the grips, I'd lay my money on a 1990's AdBlue diesel fuel tank cap. Unfortunately the modern ones have 6 grips rather than the 8 pictured.

I've had a go myself from the images you attached, but at that low resolution you don't get anything that's too useful - and even seeing the individual crystal shapes is hard enough. The problem you'll also have is that they are made up with several layers that all have patterns on...
