The I HATE PAWN stars thread!

Boba, consider your axe ground. Excellent work. Glad to see that in a thread filled with low hanging fruit, you go for math in my post.

To be precise, in my experience with the show, they offer fifty percent of the appraised value. So if the dude says it could get 10k at auction, the seller is offered 5k. I have never seen anyone offered a nickel for a 1000 dollar item.

Bottom line: these are the fundamentals of commerce. This is how the world works. I'm sort of shocked that you find this so offensive, seeing as how this show is a microcosm of the retail world we live and breath in.

Oh, and please locate the "off" button on your TV, as Brad suggested. It is a powerful tool in shielding you from the realities of how the world works :)

When I was a Pawn Broker, I never let the customer see any of my Blue Books or talk to any of my experts EVER!!

If they have something that I didn't know a price on I'd either tell them to leave it or tell them to bring it back in an hour. I always knew the price though.

You make money on how much you have loaned out, not on your sales!!! They seem to be buying everything and I've never seen them Pawn anything. That's more like an antique store than a real pawn shop.

FB

I have been to this actual shop and it is interesting indeed. They literally have a line wrapped around the building with people waiting to get in and they shop has a good size employee base. Of coarse we just see the interesting things or odd stuff that will make for good TV.

Why don't you take all that hate and turn it into a prop or something.

Such emotion over a TV show.

You suppose the shop has a clue they could sell you?

I didnt reallize a post about people getting fleeced (or fleecing themselves) at pawn shops would cause attacks and arguments, wtf people?

I think you're missing the point. Nobody is getting fleeced. People are engaging in commerce. What is awesome is that you equate everyday commerce with fleecing. :) Carry on!

Oh, and welcome to the RPF. We have a props section here too. Check it out sometime.

Have you ever seen the show?
Qoute from Rick "I hate it when people know what they got".
That shop aint rolling in it because they are giving fair prices for what they buy...

added:everyone having a bad day or just got sticks up thier asses?

Just to take this a step further.

Am I safe to assume that tonyromo lives in a more rural area?

If you have spent more than a day in a large city you learn quick that people are out to take advantage of you all the time and it is up to you if you let this happen. And I am sure that the Harrison's have seen their share so they may come across as sleazy or greasy as you say but I see them as smart and just trying to make a buck.

I have to deal with negotiating everyday and if I felt I was taking the "other side" to the cleaners, I would be shooting myself in the foot if I spoke up.

Not a poke at you at all but you wouldn't last 30 seconds in the real world.

And the American Pickers STILL make a profit on the items they buy. Even when they have told the person what they will have to sell it for, the person says "okay".

There is NO difference between the two shows.

Surprised nobody has commented on the things the Pawn shop buys and doesnt put on the floor, but calls the collectors, auctions, and specialists they know who will buy it for fair collector market value.

Retailers are typically marking up 110%. It's been true as long as I can remember. My dad sold furniture and he used that knowledge to undercut his competition all the time.

A few people have hinted at it, but I don't think anyone has said it:
Most of, if not all, of the "sellers" on that show are just guys following a script. Take for instance the episode where the 80's rocker looking guy brought in his super valuable 60's guitar that, upon appraisal, turned out to be a not that valuable 70's guitar. Well, a few "sleuths" on a guitar forum found out that the guy selling the guitar actually WORKED at the same guitar store as the Expert doing the appraisal, and the guitar was already for sale at their store for the appraised value. Theres a few cases like that where people recognize appraisers and whatnot as being friends of the the sellers. Same as the guy doing the gas pump restorations, some people on a vintage gas pump forum found out that the "restored" pictures of gas pumps people have brought in are not even the same one that was sold to him in the first place.

This thread went kerplunk. Sometimes it's good to let a trainwreck fade.

I've racked up a few clunkers threads, and just realize it's no big deal. Let it go.
