Tron Legacy Costume

Wow! That looks great!

What did you use for the Disc Mount?

It's an ABS Spigot Flange I got in the pluming section at Lowe's.

And then in the same section I picked up a 3 inch cap. I ended up cutting both down since they stuck out way too much. And I recommend sanding down the inside of the cap before you put it on. I didn't do this and had to break out the mallet and beat it down. But I know it won't move at least. Then I sanded down the writing on the top of the cap and sprayed the whole thing down with Plastic dip to give it a better look.

Here's what it looks like not attached. The pieces of black tape are covering the magnets to hold the disc on.

I purchased the EL ribbons from CoolNeon, they are very good quality. Their drivers are OK, the power in plug is pretty bad tho. I had to hard wire the power in to have bettr contact. But you can also cut down the middle to make skinner strips. Also you can't FOLD the ribbons to form shapes.... I tried that and burn 2 of the tapes. (ouch!) I will post pictures of my Quorra costume from Pax Prime 2011 yesterday. ;)

Yes, you will need the drivers and battery packs.

Are the EL ribbons from CoolNeon 'pink' when turned 'Off' or white?

This looks beyond amazing. I aspire to create something 1/4 as good as this!

Thanks.

It can all be done with patience and the humility to ask for help.

Here's some pics, better ones are coming, all I have is a city phone camera.

I forgot to mention to everyone. If you're going to light up.

Do not use solid core wiring!

Its to rigid and will break sodder connections or loosen eyelets. Use stranded because its super flexible, and since you're going to be walking around its ideal for your wiring to be super flexible.

Another thing, if you can get connectors with teeth puncture tips, use them. While making my Tron Gloves I used quarter inch wide el tape. I tried to be cheap use a drill to puncture the tape for the eyelet connectors, bad move. Its hit or miss when you drill. Get a proper punch out and or w/ a rivet tool.

If you look closely at my gloves you'll notice the ends near the wrist is not rounded and stops short. Its because I have to cut off the bad connection and reconnect it a few times. It really pissed me off how I had to shorten the length of the finger to get it to work, but had no choice. And besides in pictures no one noticed.

I will make another set of gloves, where the spots are at the right place on the knuckles, and wiring is solid with better gloves. (I don't really need too and the current ones look cool enough, but I'm picky) And because of the brightness I need to give the dot on the fingers more space.

I'm sorry that I forgot to post "how to" for the gloves, but when I make the next set, I'll try to remember too.

And by the way, I am very happy the tron cosplay community is still strong!!!! Come out to disneyland, with your cosplays sometime in october!

the new tron legacy costumes are cool but it is the disk that make the outfit.... I have seen some cool mods of the plastic toy and that is where I want to make. Having that sit on your entertainment center would make any tron fan happy

Woot! I got my Siren finger light rigged up!

OMG! so awesome! Kit and I will be lighting our finger tips with LEDs for our Siren suits as well. They will go on and off though with this foil tape rig my fiancee Tom came up with. Hope they work for us and stay on as they should on game day ;) we have to cut a hole in the middle of the hand of the glove and middle finger tip of the gloves. Our bare skin is what activates the foil tape to the batteries to the LED.

Can I ask what your grey/silver fabric of your finger tips is made out of?

Thanks girl! It's shiny spandex :).

And awesome idea with the LED! My bf rigged it up to a flat watch battery, and all I have to do is press down on the wires for it to come on. Rigging it up a little better tonight, hopefully!

We'll try to make it to the Tron shoot on Friday night. We had planned to go to the Masked Ball, but they're at the same time :|. We'll have to choose ><!

Thanks for the post David! I'm sad that you guys aren't producing the helmet. Two more questions. Does the costume light up? And is there an option to get the outfit for TRON, with the white or blue lights? As you stated in an earlier post! :confused

Awesome Rinzler pic!! Nannar he said both that it would light up and has a Tron as well in the 2nd part of his interview, should be on therpf youtube channel

I remember someone mentioning rave glove lights a few pages back, and I've been looking in on them. They will provide a bit of bulk at the fingertip but apart from that, I think it's going to be the easiest part of the costume.

I'll be getting this. My friend advised me to get high power LED's for it but we'll see how bright they are when diffused through the glove.

It strikes me that the movie siren costumes are really very thin in the fingertips - you can practically see the outline of their nails through it. I suspect they may have nothing but a single layer of latex over their fingers - in fact, I wonder if the whole suit might have been done like that, and layered over some, er, extremely serious underwear. Looking at it again, though, my guess would be that most of it is coated spandex with some plain latex in areas that need a lot of give or are critical to dexterity, like the fingers. Finding stretch fabrics that don't just look like spandex is difficult; I've tried latex coating it myself and the best I could do was a sort of sponge-stippled texture that was OK but not applicable to every situation. You can buy sheet latex but then it just starts looking like fetish gear which often isn't quite the idea... Underworld got away with it because she was a vampire!

Also I think that the general trend of girls in catsuits is particularly daring in and of itself, and I can only applaud the courage of people who are willing to don this stuff. In an original design recently we steered away from it, even though the design direction was vfert Apppleseed movie, Ghost in the Shell style in which a lot of women wear skintight bodysuits under hard armour. We nixed it simply because if you're going to do it you have to do it exactly right or it instantly looks terribly cheap and exploitative. Having seen done of the work here I'm beginning to reevaluate that decision to some extent, but I'd be interested to know what it costs to get these patterns drawn up, if that isn't an impolite question.

As I understand it there is a whole sub-discipline of tailoring dedicated to this kind of stuff (usually it finds use in swimwear and sports clothing) and it is considered quite specialist even by experienced costume people. It's pretty impressive to see it being done so successfully here! Are you folks sure you don't do this for a living?

Even at the very highest end, though, it seems to be a field involving a fair bit of compromise. Part of the trick is precision - is it me, or do the other sirens' suits fit fractionally less well than Gem's - but since fabric will not stretch infinitely there are always points where it works less well, often around the shoulders where there's a lot of motion to deal with. There's a scene in the movie where the Gem character sits with her arms speed across the back of a seat and the suit webs out quhite visibly under her arms, which is presumably a side-effect of not having a lot of excess fabric there when she's in a more everyday pose.

Please excuse such a stream of consciousness; I'm just thinking out loud really. Does any of what I've said make sense to anyone?

For those who used El panel/ribbon..What kinds of 12volt power sources did you use?
Any hi-power rechargeable type where you have to solder?

I'm using 8 AA batteries in series for each inverter. I can fit 2 sets of 8 batteries in the box that is mounted on the lower back. If you need high current draw, you can go with Lithium Ion batteries and do the same set up.

If you use 2 A4 sheets of EL Panel, it should last about 2 hours...so carry lots of batteries!
