So I tried my hand at making the transition box today and I'm less than impressed. How do you guys get it so clean looking?

Do they all start out this rough and it just takes loads of sanding to get it looking good, or do you use bondo to fill the gaps or what?

To me, it looks like butt.

I also tried a quick one in styrene, dunno if I should just go that route or what.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: Macrobinocs Transition Box Help....

Dan, I made mine out of Styrene an it turned out great. My attemps to make it out of metal and it looked like poop. The plastic was so mutch easier and gave a crisp look. Im a bit jelious of those who who did an awesome job on creating theirs Transition boxes.

Re: Macrobinocs Transition Box Help....

Instead of styrene, I used acrylic to build my transition box. Then hit it all with bondo and then sanded, primed, and painted. I, too, would have loved to have gotten a metal box done, but didn't think it would come out as nice.

Re: Macrobinocs Transition Box Help....

I stand corrected. I did use plastic sheeting and did the Bondo/Prime thing.

Dann, give me you address via pm and I will send you a part I had extra.

Re: Macrobinocs Transition Box Help....

Thanks for the tips, guys. Dex, PM sent.

I'm gonna see if I can get my metal one looking better, we'll see.

Re: Macrobinocs Transition Box Help....

Well I made a little progress with the styrene version. Still need to build the frame that attaches the viewfinder to the box. It's just superglued on for now. And of course repaint the box itself after filling seams and such with bondo.

Re: Macrobinocs Transition Box Help....

:( aww nobody cares.

It's okay, I've almost finished that area of my binocs now and will soon post some newer more betterer photos. :D

Re: Macrobinocs Transition Box Help....

Haha thanks man!

I'm having a bear of a time trying to get the paint in the markings on the resin lenses, I managed to get the Kaligar lettering looking okay on the inside, but the little numbers and such refuse to cooperate.

Anyway, here's where I'm at now, I can't believe nobody has thought to do what I did in the last photo! I take credit for being the first, darnit! :lol

I love that little idea because when you're showing them off you can say the lines and flip him out to freak out the person looking at the Bantha pic.

Re: Macrobinocs Transition Box Help....

Thanks guys, and Dex thanks for the Bantha photo! :D

Just waiting on the Seagull now I guess.

Re: Macrobinocs Finished!!

So they're all done. More or less. Gonna get some googly eyes from the craft store for the lenses, and possibly try my hand at some EL sheet behind the Bantha photo.

Re: Macrobinocs Finished!!

Looks great!

I found that the bell & howell 220 have two different styles of knobs. why is everyone using the one with the silver ring?
