Ahsoka Tano - Revisting my Daughter's Costume

I finally remembered to check this thread when I wasn't at work :lol
for some reason your pics never showed up at work, so I could never say anything about it. But it looks like you've made really great progress and this is going to be a fantastic piece. Great job!
If you have any tips for someone that is wanting to start out molding with clay (who's never done anything with clay) I'd like to hear them :love

Hey Dan...

Not yet. I was kicking several different molding ideas around with a few people looking for the best solution. Then, last night I was ready to start and I had a set back with the sculpt... I needed to fix a few things on it and 4 hours later, it was too late to start the mold. I HOPE to start it tonight and get moving on this.

Once I do, I'll post several pics of the whole process to keep everyone in the loop.

Thanks.

Update, it's in the process of being molded.

Here's the last pic before molding:

I believe he's using Dragon Skin. I'm interested to see how it turns out. I'm currently reworking my gf's Twilek and if this works well, I may use it for my Lekku.

Yup. Dragon Skin. Should allow for the lekku to be more life-like than a thicker latex. Should. hahaha.... If that doesn't work, I'll switch to latex.

I'm starting with latex, but I really think it 6 of one, 1/2 dozen of the other... Are the lekku fleshy or cartiligenous? Who knows? I think the Twilek style is definitely fleshy, so I plan on trying this out down the road.

I'll keep in the loop on the latex set though. We can compare notes and see if either material is a keeper. I figure that's 2 out of 3 and the next logical step is flexible foam.

Sounds great to me.

I picked up some of the flexible foam to try filling the inside of the top of the head with. Not really sure how that will work yet but the guy at Smooth On was very interested in it.

I did that with the last set of Twilek lekku I made for the GF. It did cut back on flexibility and added a good deal of weight (yeah. I know. foam supposed to not weight anything). The flexibility, IMO, is only a problem because when you fill the latex (or Dragon skin) with it, you have the two material working against each other. The foam on its own would probably be more flexible. Just speculation of course. The Dragon skin may behave differently.

The idea of some sort of bean bag filling might be ideal. Although then you'd have to skin the inside to keep the beans from falling out.

Right... not the whole lekku, just the top of the heapiece itself.... up in the horn area. The lekku, I'm invisioning with either bean bag beads or simply with pillow stuffing.

MOLDS DONE!!!

It'll need a bit of clean up and spot patching but it looks like it'll work great!

Here's the second back half before drying:

In the next few days I'll be cleaning up the edges of the molds so I don't cut my hands to shreds, cleaning the molds out better with some solvents, sanding a few spots and filling a few potholes where the casting wasn't as clean as it could be. Overall I'm very happy with the results and it should work great!

Nice eye candy.

Have you decided what to fill the skin with yet? Or are you going to do multiple tests?

I've been saying pretty much from the beginning... ;)

Dragon Skin filled with polly fill tenticles and the soft foam in the top of the head to keep it's shape.

If that doesn't work... plan B... latex.

Youve alluded to a few things, just askin man... :cry

LOL...just excited like a kid with a new football...

I think the Dragonskin should work. I spoke to some people at the Complete Scultptor where I got mine and they really said that Dragonskin is the most realistic thing to use for sculpts like this. I am anxious to see this ;)
