Mord' Sith - Legend of the Seeker. The definitive costume research thread.

Wow lots of great info on here Thanks Everyone whom posted, especially the pictures. I started a pattern for a mord sith costume but didn't make it past the top half of the body suite because I Realized I have no idea where to buy the leather o.o

I looked on the internet but can't find anything in the right color for the mord sith. From what I can tell its made of two thicknesses of leather, a thin one for the body suite and thicker leather for the corset/belts/Neckguard/Holster. Anyone know where that color leather is being sold? (And Or Leather suitable for it and appropriate colored leather dye?)

There are several companies that sell leather in various shades that should carry what you're looking for. Welcome to Global Leathers is a big resource out of NYC

The color you're looking for is somewhere in the oxblood range. You'll want a very lightweight garment leather. Most likely a lambskin.

I am working with Shed 11 on my mord'sith costume trade (they are taking my jacket and top set and sending me a smaller size), I will try to remember to ask them what they used for the mord'sith outfit. I will let you guys know at the Facebook page Mord'Sith Leathers Group.

In approximately 20 days, Dragon Con will be over and it will be time to start planning for next year. I'm sure Kris and I will be finding corners of the Con to geek out about it in.

Dragon Con 2011! Darken Rahl and his Mord'Sith invade!

We need our own forum is what we need.

Myself and a number of friends are hoping to get Legend of the Seeker costumes done in time for our local convention, Phoenix Comicon 2011, and I'm encouraging the heck out of them to plan for Dragon*Con 2011. :) :D

EDIT 8-19-2010: I posted this on the Mord'Sith Leathers Group on Facebook, and I figured I'd post my questions/findings here as well. :)

Mord'Sith Buckles Questions and Research

Any help/input is appreciated, as I'm trying to get as close to screen accurate as I can with the buckles and there are some that I can't find/not sure about.

Question #1: How big are the different buckles on the Mord'Sith outfit?

Research: The "heart shaped" buckle from the neck guard and all the straps on the armor and leg attachment (I think you need eight of them):

http://historicenterprises.biz/buckle-bronze-heartshaped-114-p-720.html?cPath=102_184

Buckle, Bronze ''heart-shaped'', 1-1/4'' – $7.95

Thank you to SomewhatSavvy on The Replica Prop Forum for this find. :)

Question #2: Any ideas on where to find something similar to the circular buckles used on the corset?

http://www.facebook.com/pages/MordS...2896549200&ref=fbx_album&fbid=101723643215792

For a “generic Mord-Sith” look, I suppose the round Re-Enactment buckles could work, but I like the look of the buckles on the screen-used Mord-Sith outfits.

http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/home/department/Buckles/12331-039.aspx?feature=Product_4

Re-Enactment Buckle 2” – On sale for $6
Re-Enactment Buckle 3” – Gold Club Prince: $4.49; Elite Club Price: $4.49; Regular Price: $6.99

There's also an Engraved Strap Buckle that looks nice and is fairly cheap:

http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/home/department/Buckles/7851-271.aspx?feature=Product_184

Engraved Strap Buckle 1” – Gold Club Price: $4; Elite Club Price: $4; Regular Price: $4.99

EDIT 8-23-2010: A possibility for the corset buckles:

http://www.re-enactment.biz/bronzeindex.html - in Medieval tab on the left Nav, under buckles.

http://i843.photobucket.com/albums/zz352/LotS_Archive/Possible MordSith buckles/MB02.jpg

It is the closest I've seen so far. I found the website a little hard to navigate (I had to make the webpage smaller using Ctrl and the Minus key (-) because it wouldn't scroll down to let me click the buckles link under the Medieval tab).

The buckles are 10 GBP, so that's ~$16, and three buckles are ~$46, so with shipping I'd guess the total cost somewhere between $50-$60.

EDIT 9-16-2010: Another buckle find from the Mord'Sith Leathers facebook page:

http://i843.photobucket.com/albums/zz352/LotS_Archive/Possible MordSith buckles/B-28.jpg
Another location for the corset center buckles:
https://www.quietpress.com/later.html - towards the very bottom of the page

B-28 $13.95 2 3/8" (for 1" belt) left piece

Based on a piece from Swan Lake ca 1400-1450

I think these are the best looking buckles for the corset. :)

Question #3: What is the triangular piece? Any ideas where to find something like it?

http://www.facebook.com/pages/MordS...2896549200&ref=fbx_album&fbid=101723749882448

EDIT 8-22-2010: Found it!

Al Stohlman Brand Center Plate -- Gold Club Price: $6.40, Elite Club Price: $4.80, Regular Price: $8

Here's the buckles that I think go with a specific Mord'Sith. Feel free to agree/disagree.

Triana – One of the few Mord-Sith who doesn't have circular buckles on the corset part of the armor; instead she has the smaller 3-piece buckles like the big belt buckle.

http://www.facebook.com/pages/MordS...2896549200&ref=fbx_album&fbid=101723759882447

***I found one of the Mord'Sith “extras” in the last episode of Season 2 also has the 3-piece buckles instead of the circular buckles so it is “canon” for more than more Mord'Sith. Woo-hoo!

Apologies for the double-post, but I wanted to scream "VICTORY!" in regards to the triangular piece for the Mord'Sith belt/leg attachment:

Tandy Leather Factory - Al Stohlman Brand Center Plate

Al Stohlman Brand Center Plate -- Gold Club Price: $6.40, Elite Club Price: $4.80, Regular Price: $8

I was going a little nuts trying to figure out what that piece could be, so yay for the finding and also yay for it not being discontinued. :)

Wow Carenix! This is great stuff! I'm really trying hard right now to not be more excited for Dragon Con 2011 than for 2010. Not only are things starting to explode here, I may have a close friend interested in taking on a Daharan soldier outfit. Once Kristina and I get rolling on her Mord'Sith, it may be a selling point to get him to do one for his wife.

Too bad she can't talk her dude into dressing up. :(

Hey gang,
I just got a request to make an Agiel, so I am going to start the build on it next week. It will be as screen accurate as I can make it. Just wanted to see if interest was still there for this project. If so, I can do a build thread for it as well.
Cheers,
Brash

@Darth Mule: Thanks! I was doing the research for myself anyway and hopeful other people will find it helpful. :) And yay for pulling more people into "Legend of the Seeker" costumes! :D Peer pressure can be a good thing sometimes.

@brashsculptor: Please do post a build thread on the agiel. :D That would be very helpful for when I start work on mine. :)

Back to the Mord'Sith armor buckles:
From the Mord'Sith Leatherworkers page, a possibility for the corset buckles has been found:

Mercia Sveiter - Bronze Castings for the Re-enactor - in Medieval tab on the left Nav, under buckles.

http://i843.photobucket.com/albums/zz352/LotS_Archive/Possible MordSith buckles/MB02.jpg

So, somewhat related. Anyone have any really good reference images of Darken Rahl? I have a pretty good collection going, but none that really show what he's wearing on his lower half (looks like a skirt), or that get a good look at the gold lining on the robe and vest collar.

Darth Mule: Do you have the pictures of the screen used costume?

(Here's the original listing where they have a nice write up about the costume) Darken Rahl Robes Original Legend of the Seeker costume - eBay (item 180538581748 end time Jul-27-10 01:36:48 PDT)

I found someone who made the costume (so maybe they might share more information if you ask):

costumes: Darken Rahl long coat and vest

Another buckle find from the Mord'Sith Leathers facebook page:

This person is in the United States, so possibly cheaper on the shipping than to order the other corset buckle

Thanks for the links! I just spent the last 15 minutes printscreening and cropping from the eBay auction (curse ebay for taking away the "save picture as" option).
This is the best info I've found so far. The description alone verifies most of what I had drawn from looking at pictures (sari fabric for trim, chenille for coat, etc.) I should be able to execute a pretty rocking replica from this.
The maker I found earlier. Its not very well done.I have tailor training though, so most costume/cosplay menswear doesn't live up to my standards. She has some good ideas that I can steal though.

I got to talk to this girl at Dragon Con. She made hers and researched the crap out of it down to calling the production company for buckles. Her costume was amazing. Mostly because unlike the girls with ill-fitted screen-used, hers was molded to her figure. I'd love to talk her into putting it back on next year, but she said she would probably never wear it again on account of it being so uncomfortable. I believe she's on the Mord'Sith leathers group. I think she donated alot of the buckle research there too.

And we will be in force next year. I think we'll have quite the showing if everyone sticks with it. I'd love to see some male costumes. I haven't seen any good ones yet (not that they don't exist). Actually those two Rahls in that link are the only ones I've seen.

Would love to go to Dragon Con next year in my screen-used suit, but if it falls near the Seattle PAX convention like it did this year (same weekend), then I probably won't go. But, I did confirm with another lady who has a screen-used suit that she is going to SDCC (san diego comic con) in her costume. So, look for a blond (her) and a brunette Mord-Sith (me) at the con. I will be going with my husband who has a Dragon Corps outfit from the show, and the other lady is going with her boyfriend who has a D'Haran uniform as well.

Hey everyone, stumbled across this thread while searching for buckle sources for my Mord Sith costume- talk about jackpot! :lol

I noticed that someone was looking for a back view of the costume. This is one of the best I've found so far:
back-neck.jpg

@Darth Mule: I've been talking to the same lady too on the Mord'Sith Facebook page. Her help has been absolutely awesome. :D

@Vianeth: Would love it if you could make Dragon*Con. I'm hoping to make SDCC though right now I'm committed to firmly to Dragon*Con. Will have to see when SDCC registration opens.

@PinPrincess: Hi! Welcome to the Replica Prop Forum. If you do Facebook at all, there is a *FANTASTIC* resource - Mord'Sith Leathers Group

I know it's been posted already in this thread, but wanted to really recommend it to any new people interested in the Mord'Sith costume. ;) :) Nice picture find. :)

Thanks for the welcome Carenix :) I jumped right on the facebook page as soon as I saw the link posted further up-thread! I also tracked down Legend Costumes on facebook and Twitter.

I'm not being a super stickler for accuracy to the TV show since I first dreamed up this costume years ago based on the book. It feels like sensible cheating to go with the lycra/spandex body suit instead of a leather one. I will likely also go for flat footwear though that aspect of the costume is currently undetermined.

Thought I'd share a pic of the pattern making so far :love

In case you haven't seen these photos, there were several taken at a LotS meetup at Dragon*Con this year. Here's a Flickr photo group where you can see many Seeker photos from the con. These are mostly from the meetup Friday night.

Flickr: Legend Of The Seeker Costumes

There were some screen used suits, mine was custom made, and we had some ladies who made their own! Everyone looked fantastic in the Seeker gear, and I'm already looking forward to next year! (**Hopefully we will have a Richard next time!**)

And yes, the fb group is an amazing resource. Thanks @Carenix for re-posting, it is really fun to have such a network of LotS fans out there.

This is a really fun thread! I haven't really posted anything because I'm not explicitly making this costume...yet. I made a Seeker vest a little while back and am currently revamping my pattern to make the 2-vest look along with pants, boots, pendant and so on. I will also be completing Kahlan's Mother Confessor outfit and quite possibly the dark confessor, Cara and Zedd. Needless to say, we're REALLY looking forward to next years SD Comic Con!
