Just finished: TOS Star Trek 3-D Chess Set

Bending and constructing the frame

Test fitting the parts

Aluminum disc that will become the base.

The 3-D playing boards

Painting the playing levels.

Mating the frame to the machined based.

The aftermath at my lathe machining the base parts.

Making the smaller attack boards.

Finished.

Playing a match with Robby.

Beautiful results, very nicely done! I attempted this in Jr. High, when the manual first came out, and the results were, well, the phrase "train wreck" comes to mind. Now- the biggest obstacle I found to this project: Do you have a set of rules for this layout? I've never found them, and gave up looking ages ago.

The only semi-official set of 3-D chess rules appeared in one of the Star Trek Poster Books. Maybe Number 13. One of them anyway.

I had 3-D Chess downloaded at one time. If I can find the site, I'll post it here. You could play against the computer (I never won).

Hope you are saving shvings from the base. There are places that buy that stuff back.
