Simon Tam Firefly Costume

I'm making a Simon Tam costume for DragonCon '09. I'm basing the costume off of the episode 'Serenity'. I've found a place for the rose glasses. The pants, from what I've seen, are plain black and the shirt is regular white dress shirt. The shoes are black dress shoes, loafers(?). The vest is black, front and back, but has a semi-noticeable pattern on it as well as interesting buttons. The jacket, which I think of as optional, is rather normal, save that it is collar-/lapel-less. The last thing, the med kit, is a red case that I have not been able to identify, though it looks vaguely familiar.

I wanna say the vest was custom made from silk with an oriental pattern. I'll see if I can look it up in the Companion for you.

The medcase looks like it started out life as luggage.

The med kit looks like a beauty case.
I haven't found the correct model but this one looks close.

There all over ebay.de.
Are these type of cases called differently in the us or uk? I searched on ebay.com and .co.uk but found almost nothing ....

(I posted this also on fireflyprops.net)

Good find. First thing I searched for was a cosmetics case as it reminded me a bit of the freebies my wife gets from the dept store counters but I couldn't find anything remotely close.

that's from the Serenity episode right? I think it's dark blue silk with a wavy pattern on it, if it's the same one he's wearing when he first gets on the ship.

I actually looks alot like a Wahmaker vest. Either way, a simple Victorian vest with no collar. Also similar in cut to formal wear with the higher neckline.

Oh sorry, here's a picture of it:

It looks kinda like leather or heavy fabric.

It looks like a jacquard patterned semi-matte fabric to me. Either a synthetic knit (or woven) fabric you can get from the formals/bridal section of any good fabric store OR it could be a dark/black on dark/black Oriental pattern weave fabric and that might actually be silk. That's the trouble with film: the textures aren't as true to life as they are in person, although with Blu-ray and very hi def tv, they're getting closer and closer to the in-person thing.
