Show your Dr. Who props!

Here are some behind the scenes photos from the episode, including a good photo of some of the emoji buttons.

I'm not sure if the border is part of the image or the button, but I've taken a really quick crack at the graphics for some of the emoji. There's a link to my psd file below (at higher res) if anyone wants to do anything with it.

That's excellent work, well done!

I can't post the original files but the metal rim was indeed part of the graphic. We had a load printed onto domed resin badges by a local company, and then they were stuck on both sides of a laser-cut 3 or 5mm (probably 3) acrylic disc.

Thanks for the info! I could see a slight transition with the border, but I wasn't sure whether it was due to the rim being part of the graphic, or whether it was caused by glue or something in construction.
With that in mind, here's an updated version with the border included, and attempted to scale to print size. I've estimated the badge is about 5cm diameter based on screenshots of the actors holding them, which should be pretty close until it's confirmed otherwise. Based on that size estimate, 5mm thickness looks perfect to my eye. 3mm looked too thin when I did a quick test in 3D software.

Hey there, we have a thread over on TARDIS Builders discussing this prop and I wondered whether you would mind me quoting your post over there for anyone else who might be interested?

Thanks so much for sharing these! Sorry to seem impertinent, but would you happen to have a blank, plain yellow one for the back side of it?

I think I have a Patrick Troughton sonic screwdriver/penlight! I'd actually purchased this some years ago when I was in the medical field and I can't believe I zoned out on having this!

(Actually, I can: it's not an LED light, so when I got my first LED penlight, it went the way of most of Troughton's episodes.)

So... any thoughts, questions, or opinions? Let me know! Hopefully the dimensions should work with the grips.

No problem. You could do that with the psd file I linked, but if you're not a Photoshop guy, here are the png files.

By all means. I noticed you guys were quizzing over the changes to the TARDIS signs - at some point I'll update my website with the new ones.

That looks like the gem grading light that many of us used as a close enough match before the real one was discovered, although yours has a different activation button. The reason we know that this is not the actual pen light is because of the way that the bulb itself is recessed into the tip. It differs from the screen caps of the screen used prop.

The real penlight is currently believed to be the Ever Ready penlight with the blue end cap, the color having been confirmed by Fraser Hines. The Ever Ready penlight matches the screen scene details best, including the way the bulb is recessed

On goes the search, but at least I've got a 'close enough for stuntwork' version for the time being. Thanks for your info!

Here's a 4th sonic screwdriver I recently finished (built from a Bluebox303 kit)

It's very hard to get paint to stick to brass, so the red on the flat faces of the halo is a light coat (and the pictures exaggerate it) - didn't want the red paint to pull loose when removing the inner halo surface masking tape.

I wasn't even planning to do this replica. But, I was in Michaels and saw this pack of 4 clear pin-backed buttons. They open and you just slip your printed emoji inside.

The pack was $1.99 and on top of that, I used my 40% off coupon I got from the Michaels.com website. Quickest and cheapest prop I've ever made. :lol

I love smoked salmon. I've never seen a smoker that cool, though !

Thanks. I've cooked a bunch of stuff in it so far. I'm thinking about building a bigger one (that one is a half scale Tardis) so I can smoke more at once. Definitely was a fun project though.

Hi guys. Kind of new here, but thought I would post a pic of my K-9 replica

Nice! Is it motorized?

Even the DW team couldn't put a small tv screen on actual prop in the 70s! It always amazes me how present day modelers are building props etc that basically do in real life what an army of sfx technicians had to fake for a tv screen years ago. In 20 years we'll be building sonic screwdrivers that actually unlock things...

Is that a real computer screen ? Very nice replica !

Thanks.
Yes, it has a real computer in the form of a Raspberry Pi controlling the side LCD. It allows it to play videos and do a few other things.

It's fully motorized (driveable) and includes motorized tail, ears, neck, antenna probe, and blaster gun.
Still a work in progress, but a great project. I will be bringing him to Comicpalooza this coming weekend.
