Proper Finishing Order for Paint, Clear, and Wash?

Hi everyone.

I'm working on a 3D printed Baby Groot. I would like to do some detail work with a wash, so that I can get the "lower" areas of his head and body filled in a bit darker than the surface to give him some visual variance.

I also would like him to be finished in a matte, or maybe satin, finish.

Based on what I have been able to find I would want to go in this order:

1. Primer
2. Base coat
3. Gloss clear
4. Wash
5. Satin/matte clear

From what I understand the gloss clear is used so that the wash won't "grab" onto the finish and become harder to wipe off/control.

Does this look correct? If not, can anyone offer advice on what I have mixed up or missing?

Thanks!

You are correct. The gloss will help your wash flow into nooks and crannies. A flat coat is microscopic hills and vallies that would grab and spread your wash over the surface, which is what you don't want in your case.
