Happy 40th anniversary, STAR WARS! :-)

There was a thread I did back in 2011 that was about the SW and ESB comic books I spent almost five years drawing as a kid. I thought in honor of the anniversary I might revisit it for any of you that did not see it back in '11.

If you can get the links to work, that is. It's all on Photobucket (does anyone even use that anymore?). I had a little trouble getting the links to work--don't know if it my computer or not. See if you can get to it, if you like.

But it was my labor of love as a young teenager. I spent ALL my free time drawing it. My skills certainly lacked at that age as I had no art training at that point. It's all of SW and about half of ESB. There is a foreward at the beginning of each which tells how and what I did. You'll have to click on each individual page to get it large enough to see.

Maybe you'll get a chuckle out of it.

I was 19 back in 77 when I first saw STAR WARS, I know I'm old and get off my lawn, and I was blown away by it. I saw it in 70mm widescreen with sound all around and when the ships come in from the top of the screen you could actually here the sound behind you and then feel it go over your head. I've been hooked even since.

Geez, that is confusing. lol

The borough of Jenkintown! Home of The Wook, Bradley Cooper, and The Goldbergs!

(I'm probably the most famous of the three--but it's close, I suppose.)

The Wook

Oh, that's right! We've talked about this before. I just forgot. Neat!

My wife grew up in Pottstown. :)

Cool! That's actually about an hour outside of town (although people from there would probably just say "Philly burbs" to folks who don't know better). I'd call it "deep burbs" myself. :) But then, I live right downtown, so maybe my perspective is warped.

Those are awesome! You can see your linework getting better and better with the Empire pages. Very cool.

That reminds me of an old Flicker account someone started years ago. It was made for people to post photos and artwork from the years 1977 to 1983. It serves as a nice little time capsule from that period:

What a great place to see Star Wars! Enormous screen, with a seating capacity of 922! It must've been electric in there!

I saw the last film ever shown, there: a Special Engagement of The Godfather, circa the turn of the century. It was a real treat.

Cessna, if it's not too much trouble, could you post a current photo--maybe a screencap from google earth--and mark with an X the location of the theater? If not, no worries. I just have trouble finding it whenever I cruise down the 8 or Hotel Circle.

You can compare to then and see where it used to be. Roads are the same. Amazing how much crap gets built! Too crowded in the area, they keep adding massive condos.

So I guess there is a BevMo there now. LOL

I saw it in early June I think back then, didn't get to go for a couple weeks. Perhaps I should go to BevMo and celebrate.

Was 11, my mom drove my friend and me 22 miles from Ontario Ca. to West Covina to see it, as it was initially in a limited release and not in Ontario. It's good to have a mother who is a bit of a Science Fiction nut herself.

It sounded crazy to my parents that I actually wanted to pay money to see the same thing again. LOL

@Laspector : This is cool! I did the same with "Battlestar Galactica" and "Condorman". I tape-recorded the sound of the movies and then drew the images. It was the only way to capture the experience then, back in the old days, when there was no VCR yet. :)

So, a bunch of the folks who made Star Wars a reality all got together in San Rafael on May 27 to celebrate the anniversary. Joe Johnston talks about it on his Twitter page and shares some photos (looks like the old ILM building might have been the gathering point?). He says this was the first time some of them had seen one another in 40 years. Nice to see Gary Kurtz there. Pretty cool stuff.
