I know people use googly eyes but i have been using some cool faux rivets, they are called peal embellishments and come in packs of 70 and there only £1.00 a pack. They are 10mm in diameter and 5mm high and solid, they have a flat glue disc on the back but i removed that with a craft knife and fixed them with contact glue. They are in sale in the UK im guessing as its a craft item there be available in other countries too.
