Davy Jones Chest/Key dimensions help?

Hey

I'm making a Davy Jones costume and I want to make a chest/key/heart to go along with it. Annoyingly I'm finding it ny on impossible to get accurate dimensions for them.

The MR chest replica on Amazon.com

https://www.amazon.com/Pirates-Cari...d=1490773472&sr=8-1&keywords=davy+jones+chest

... states 19.6 x 15.5 x 14.2 inches but also on the same page, approximately 18" x 12" x 13". Very helpful :) Ive also found dimensions online stating its 15" long, and or 10-inches tall x 14-inches wide. Annoyingly all those proportions don't match up with my own research. Taking screengrabs from the film and recreating the chest in 3D I believe the chest is different to both the above.

If you look at the image above the red line is Amazons official sizing whilst the blue line is front/side from my own research. Now im pretty good at this and have been sizing in 3D for a while and I just cant get the MR proportions to work. I'm happy I've got the proportions correct I just don't know how big it is :)

I've tried grabbing stills from the film, other people holding the chest etc but there just isn't any part of the film when the chest is next to an object I can use as a good base for figuring out its dimensions.

A few very old threads on the RPF have guessed the chests dimensions from smaller toy replicas etc but I really would like some definitive facts.

That takes me onto the key. I thought I could use this image:

https://www.yourprops.com/movieprop...Man-s-Chest-Davy-Jones-key-to-his-chest-1.jpg

Or indeed any shot from the film when the key is in the chest:

https://disneyscreencaps.com/pirates-of-the-caribbean-dead-mans-chest-2006/77

...to figure out its size. However I cant find any exact figures for how large the key is either :( Once again the MR dimensions just don't appear to be correct. They state 3.5 inchs x 1.5 inchs x 0.25 inchs. Now just looking at a picture of the key square on, if its length was indeed 3.5 inches its defiantly narrower than 1.5 inchs *confused*. I also believe, from looking at pictures like this:

... that it is longer than 3.5 inchs. If you take Johnny Depp to be 5 10 and the size of his hand... Id initially guess the key to be about 4.5 inchs long? Places like Shapeways etc sell replica keys but they are in the range of 95mm which is 3.7 inchs

Does anyone have any concrete facts about these props please? If not does anyone actually have the MR key or the MR Chest and would be kind enough to measure
them both for me?

Thanks :)

Another option for gauging size is the MR key packaging. Finding the most square on picture I could find, Amazon lists the packaging size as 23.2 x 23.2 x 3.6 cm. I had to ever so slightly transform this in PS to make it square but only slightly.

So using that, I can guestimate the key is 10.8cm x 3.2cm (4.25 x 1.25 inches)

However I have found sizing for the packaging ranging from 23.2cm x 23.2cm, 24cm x 23cm or 9.1 inchs x 9.1 inchs. Now they all vary ever so slightly but that would only change my key sizing here by a few mm.

So 4.25 inchs.... yeah I could believe this is that in the hand of someone whos 5 10. I'm 6 5 so my hand is larger and I've guessed trying to copy that picture as best I can in my hand 4.5 ish inchs.

Still all guess work though :)

Alot of math boggles my brain[emoji38]. Looks like your onto something here. I never thought the MR chest was the right size myself but hey I thought I was crazy. Good thing I wasn't the only one who noticed;).

Let the research commence!!!

Yes currently I don't think the MR chest is the correct size... that or the measurements provided on all sources for said replica are wrong. That very well may be the case.

Another avenue might be getting a friend whos the same height as Jack Sparrow... and recreating these poses from the film. I might be able to extrapolate its size from a number of stills. That's going to be an odd photoshoot :)

Because you have all of Jack in shot from different angles, and hes roughly in the same pose in each shot... creating each one and getting an average chest size from all 5... might be accurate enough.

I have that key in a box somewhere. ill look for it and measure it for you. it might take a few days, as its in a box in the attic. a very disorganized, messy attic.

Mike you are a star! Thank you very much :) :) I should be able to use that to figure out the chests size now.
