K-2SO customized 31" Jakks Figure

The K-2SO droid has been slowly becoming my favorite droid from the SW universe and my favorite character from R1. I recently built a Bandai 1/12 figure and it ignited my craving for a bigger figure so I went for this really BIG figure from Jakks. Its a toy but with some nice potential of becoming something more. It has very limited articulation but its very well constructed. After I disassembled the whole thing I rapidly decided that those rubber antennas from the back looked too big and out of scale. So my efforts were dedicated today at making new ones with some copper tubing and styrene.

As you know K-2SO eyes are one of the most cool details of this big guy and the Jakks figure lacks anything resembling what we all saw in the screen. It had only a decal or paint over what you expect the eyes should be. After giving it some thought I went with the headlights from a 1/18 scale die cast car. Of course I want to light those up and achieve the effect seen in the screen of a pinpoint of light in the center and a halo at the periphery. Like in this example:

Re: K-2SO costomized 31" Jakks Figure

I drilled out his eyes with a Dremel, used some aluminum tubing and added the lenses. The results were great and I am very satisfied with both the look with the lights on and off.

Apart from the lighting in his eyes does he have any more lights? I checked the images from the movies available around the net but it seems the eyes is the only detail with light. Any experts can chime in?

Would love to hear your comments! Thanks for looking! :D

Looks really good!

I'd say wait a bit for the blu-ray, but I think he had white dots on his left side chest and on his mid-center back he had a red graphic and some white light.

But it was all too quick for me to remember and images get flipped.

Anyway, I like what you are doing.

Lovely work......the eyes look brilliant.....I had a look through all reference & trailer stuff & it looks like the eyes are the only lights.....but don't go crazy with the brightness,.....the shot where Jin shoots the other droid ("did you know that wasn't me?" Scene)...it looks like the eyes are like reflections......not lit at all.....but when the droid dies & falls.....the eyes switch off & the light goes off

When you look at his eyes there is an area in the centre.....like pupils

EDIT: there are lights on his back, like Darth Meek rightly said

Awesome job on this so far! I like the lighting for the eyes that's a good idea. I think I used 5mm LEDs and a small washer. You are doing a nicer job than I did on the knee joints I didn't bother putting styrene in there. It's a fun conversion. The bluray wasn't out yet when I built this, and there were very few good reference pictures online, so I took some liberties with the lighting. I had the blaster scaled down 3D printed. It's a Han Solo gun - I couldn't find anything close to what K2 actually uses in the flick.

Started sanding and priming some pieces. Tried to get rid of some molding lines specially on his head. I preserved the shoulder imperial emblem which is painted and of very good quality. Ive noticed on some screen shots from the movie that his armor finish looks very close to the finish of a firearm or a blaster. Its finish is a dark grey, slightly metallic hue. I plan of doing a similar process as my 3D printed Solo Blaster. A flat black base followed by graphite powder application. Then seal it all off with a matte clear. Then weathering and subsequent matte clear coat as needed.

The finish of my Blaster:

My 1/12 scale Bandai K2SO. The plastic color of this kit is very close to the actual screen appearance:

Hey guys a small update for anyone who is following this! LOL! Started with some details at the back to make it more screen accurate. Ive been watchin R1 in Amazon a lot lately. This image is a cell pic directly from the screen of a moment where K2 is coming out from an elevator at the Scarif base:

Im happy with the looks but working with this plastic is a PITA! Its "rubberized" and hard to sand or cut clean.

Looks good. I like that Jakks is putting out these bigger figures. How bad was the articulation? I got the Halo Master Chief who is 31" too, but it has next to no articulation and I'm too scared to try and add any. Plus nobody makes action figure joints that big.

Articulation is next to none. Head and neck, shoulders and wrists only. Legs are completely stiff. It has great stability though and stands on iots own quite easy. I thought about adding articulation but since I will not be playing with found no use for it...LOL!

That's pretty much how the chief is, the balance is amazing but his head and hands move and that's about it. At least K2SO can be modded a bit, all the chief really needs is a good paint job.

Excellent work!

For the Bandai 1/12 version, did you paint it, or did you leave the plastic color and add grapite/silver chipping etc...?
