Just recently finished this project and wanted to share. Took a few pictures along the way of the progress. Let me know what you guys think

Here is the finished product, but I put some pictures of the build below for those who want to see

Holy crap that looks incredible!!! The edges all look really clean and the paint looks great.

I have a partially completed one but I will likely need to redo it because of a few details on the barrel that cannot be done easily afterwards. I used a similar template I printed on 40" 30" paper to make the templates. I think I used 34" as the length.


I had a couple of questions if you want to share:
1.) On the banding around the stock and the grip, was that styrene? Or another type of plastic?
2.) The round bits around the ammo lock, are those 3D-Printed or made from something like Epoxi-sculpt?
3.) On the four inlays on the top, in front of the micro-fusion cell, how did you cut those so straight? I tried using a spiral bit on one attempt, but I could not keep it straight enough.

Thank you, I appreciate the kind words.

It looks like you're off to a great start. Your cells look really nice too.

Ill try to answer questions, hopefully we are referencing the same parts lol.

The banding was made out of styrene that I heated up and bent around the grip, then sanded to shape. Along with the stock, just heated up and bent around the stock.


The pieces around the ammo cell were also styrene that were layered together then sanded to shape. I looked, but I don't really have any good pictures for when I was working on that part. :/

And the vents things on the top, I used a drill bit and then a cut off wheel on a dremel for the straight parts. But it did require some bondo and sanding to fix the imperfections. Bondo tends to save the day quite often for me. I have a difficult time cutting straight lines, very rarely am I happy with how it looks the first time around.

Thanks for the help! On the MF cells, I bought some 2" pine dowel, cut it, and used a belt sander to round the edges (Deskinning my knuckles a few times) then a bandsaw/dremel to etch in the indentions. I am going to redo the rifle from the beginning this time. There are a number of issues with how I cut/assembled it, and I learned a ton from it. The stock was miscut (I made it to be detachable) and I did not measure twice. Fortunately MDF is not horrifically expensive, so not too much lost. I'm also going to look into making some parts thinner/hollow to try to reduce weight. It's not extremely heavy, but some cons are a little weird with some props, plus carrying it won't be too much fun

Wow. Very clean build. The laser rifle is on my list once I have room to get the bandsaw out of storage!

Very cool! This is my next project. My nephew wants one and I'm building one. He wants a clean version like it's new for some reason. How do you think the MDF on the stock will hold up; is it pretty strong? I was worried about using it if it would break easily.

I thought you turned the cells on a lathe, they look really nice. Nothing wrong with starting over. Everything is a learning experience. I've started over on quite a few projects myself. And I hear you on the weight issue, the rifle is kinda heavy and awkward to carry.

That is pretty cool you're building one for your nephew, you should share some pictures. I used 3/4 inch MDF for the stock and I'm not concerned with it breaking. But I guess it kinda depends on the age of your nephew and if he is destructive or not lol.
