Poe's T-70 X-Wing, Revell 1:50 (?) build

Hey all, I enjoy looking at all the builds here on the RPF, but I haven't made one myself in a long time. I found the Revell Sanp Tite skill level 2 kit on sale recently, so I decided to have a go. I've read about it in other build threads, and I know it's not the most accurate, but it seemed pretty good and a good kit for me to gete feet wet with.
I originally intended just to weather the model, but as I went, I started making some adjustments to make it a little more accurate looking.
I'm mainly using acrylics. Since I'm not a regular model builder, I don't have all the paints and equipment that a seasoned builder would have, so I decided to use mostly what I had so I wouldn't have to spend a lot on this kit. I've seen acrylics being used for weathering, so I figured it would work alright. I ended up using them for some full painting too, starting with BB-8. I also used a fine point black Sharpie for his "eye" and also a mechanical pencil for some details.

I started weathering and making adjustments before I started assembling the kit. I don't know if that was the best idea, but I felt it was easier handle while the parts were still on the sprues.

I used white washes to bring out the panel lines on the dark parts and black/dark grey on colored portions. on

I tried to find reference pics of the T-70 Resistance X-Wing from SW:TFA, though I wasn't able to find as much as I wanted. I found some renders and model pics, and though I don't feel they're entirely accurate, they gave me some ideas. I'm also referencing pics of the Bandai kit as inspiration.

First real adjustment I made for semi-accuracy was to remove some paint from the from of the fuselage. The stripes pre-painted on the kit extended too far forward.

I also cut a panel lines just in front of the newly sanded area, and a couple areas just in front of the cockpit, one of which would serve to outline a new gray stripe that was omitted on the starboard side (not sure if it's OK to use "starboard" to refer to sides of a starfighter, but it sure seems appropriate).

Some more pics of painting and weathering so far. I decided to go dirtier than the ship seems in the film, mainly because it's more fun! I used a fine point silver pen for some of the details. I used the mechanical pencil to outline some panel lines and highlight some edges - it gives a nice, metallic look that can look like worn metal, and appears dark or light depending on how the light hits it. For some of the engine parts I used washes and dry brushing to get the look I wanted, using black for the low lights and overall grime and burnt sienna for rust and grease. I also dry brushed some highlights. I'm still working on the whole thing so I'll probably keep tweaking things as I go. Overall, I'm pleased with my first weathering attempt, learning as I go.

Looks like you're having fun with this project, and it's coming along nicely. Will be cool to see the final results. :D

Good references are hard to find for the T-70 for sure, especially since some of the smaller details can change depending on which version you look at from the film. If you need better pics for any specific details let me know, and I'll see if I can help.

Wow, wait, I just noticed one of the screenshots posted above shows red T70's!? Is that from the movie?!

BB-8 looks so much better.

Excellent job so far with the weathering

Looking forward to the rest!

Personally I like at least getting the parts into sub-assemblies for weathering. That way I can extend a drip of blast/smudge across multiple parts and it looks like it was one continuous thing instead of stopping at the part edge. Not sure if that makes sense. Plus you can hid the sprue marks

Also, as far as reference, I see you have one of the pics, but here is link to high res version of the other ILM renders. You can really zoom in pretty far on these
Maybe they tweaked things later on in production before the final cut, but these are probably as good as it gets

Funny enough, it looks like ILM literally took the blue and white X-wing render and just inverted the colors for Poe's version. All the markings are the exact same other than color.

I took this image and used MSPaint to invert the colors and viola. Look familiar?

Thanks Mandalorian, and thanks for the offer! I noticed too how some of the details changed. Since I'm not going for 100% accuracy it makes it a little easier to pick and choose what I want to do.

Murph, yes, I found that screengrab, I forget where, but I believe it's from some deleted scene. The scene probably wasn't finished, the person who posted noted that all the x-wings in that shot are Red 2!
I was actually thinking of painting this as a red squadron ship before I saw that pic, thought it would look cool and different. I decided to stuck with the black and orange just because it was easier for now, but I may do a full repaint sometime in the future.

Blakeh1, thanks! I agree with the weathering, it's better to do it after skme assembly to keep it consistant across seams, though I figured for this model, the seam line are on angles for the fuselage and the wings are separate, so the weathering breaks along those separations anyway. I had planned to do more weathering and touchups after assembly too.
That is crazy about the negative image paint scheme! It looks too perfect to be a coincidence for sure.

I decided to make some changes to the cockpit. The seat needed a little help - there were some bubbles so I used some Bondo spot filler and sanded to smooth it out a bit. I don't think the Bondo was the best option, it seemed to melt the styrene a bit on the surface, but ultimately it did the job. I also tried to cut in some lines to indicate the separation of the black and gray two-tone fabric.

Next I started changing the back of the cockpit. I used bits of sprue, carving and sanding to make it look a little more accurate, referencing the Bandai kit and the few reference pics I could find. I sanded down some of the existing area to make it look more assymetrical and more similar to what I saw in my reference pics. I know it's not accurate, but it's a little better than what was there.

Wow, top work Bloop, i'm working on the blue version at the moment, the Revell kits aren't that bad, they just need a little extra work done to them to make them shine.

Getting closer to the end, though this is one of those things that I probably can't help tweaking for a while. I've got everything assembled except BB-8 and the landing gear areas. I'm still figuring out how I want to display this, whether "in flight" or on the ground. I had to do some sanding to get the wings to close more tightly. There's still some visible seams I didn't fill, mainly because filling them properly would require repainting the whole thing.
I wish I'd modified the cockpit glass. It's so thick where the clear part attaches to the inside of the rear cockpit area that it detracts from the look. Plus the moving part of the cockpit is very loose, I feel like gluing it shut to keep it from flopping around, but I don't want to prevent further modding of the cockpit area. Maybe I'll use a tiny bit of double-face tape or something to keep it closed tight for now.
20170323_195405.jpg20170323_195524.jpg20170323_195650.jpg20170323_195720.jpg

I did more weathering, dry brushed a lot of silver. I also repainted the cockpit exterior silver and added a silver stripe to the middle of the split engines.
I noticed the model was missing these thin gray pinstripes that narrow to a point on the side of the fuselage, seen here in this pic on the right side of Poe.

Poe_Dameron_Resistance_Base.jpg

I painted them on by taping it off and painting them combined, like a wedge shape, then I scribed a line separating them. I think if I did this kit over I'd make some custom decals for some of these smaller details, but this worked out ok.

Cool work. The stripes going forward from the torpedo launchers looks really good.

Curious, what's the strip thing that's on top of the slanted part at the back of the fuselage in the 4th pic? Looks like a strip of thin foam or something. Is that part of the model or something you added?

Thanks Mandalorian! The strip you noticed in that picture is in fact original to the model. I didn't notice the odd texture until I took that pic. I haven't noticed anything resembling it in any of the reference pics I've found, so I'm thinking of sanding it away. I think it might be a mistake on the original sculpt, it just doesn't look like it belongs.

Interesting. I haven't seen anything like it either and it just seemed to pop out when I saw that pic. Always sad to notice things like this after the painting is done. I wonder why it's there in the first place. Seems like a random mistake to be made, and as you said looks very out of place.
