Sealing Spray paint

I'm using rustoleum Metallic bright silver to paint a wooden surface. However on the back of the can it says a clearcoat finish is not recommended. However I would like to protect it, should I follow what it says on the can or should I go ahead and use the crystal clear enamel glossy finish sealer? It's for a wooden surface of a table

If you put any clear coat on top you'll end up with basically a gray color. The other thing is with the aluminum-based ones, the clear will actually start sucking the aluminum out and make it look totally crazy and swirly. Been there on both counts. I haven't found anything that preserves the look of the bare paint. If someone else has I'd love to know it.
