molotow liquid chrome pens and spray paints

About the amount to fill a marker :p

Heard back from the uk seller graff-city (i think they are the main distributors) , they said the 30ml refills should be in at the end of February.

Fingers crossed

I met the Molotow guys at Comic Con Portugal, I had a booth there as well and they were really excited about my props and things.
They did a bucket load of demonstrations using resin kits and thing we had the for display and we really liked their products - they essentially convinced us to carry their products on our store, not everything just the stuff we use, and we are going to have those refills by sometime this month first hand! Also a crazy amount of chrome pens because they are crazy cool.

Here are my results using the 4mm nib. 16665326_10208037697076791_6484850614532706443_o.jpg

Hopefully they ship to the US... if not, I have a favor to ask... or three. Maybe 5.. 5 refills. :)

Posting stuff is not a problem, its the post office that is the problem.

The ink is alcohol based and flammable as far as i know. A restricted item in their eyes for airmail.

These days i get asked whats in the package, is it flammable etc.. they have a list now.

I can't even put "resin film prop" on packages now without getting asked if its in liquid form?

multiple refills might get inspected, could try one to see if it gets through ok.
Maybe 30ml is ok, i need to look up the rules in detail.

Well I thought 'why not' and ordered a 2mm pen from Amazon. I had my eye on chroming my NECA Endo.

Holy hell, this stuff is amazing. The only drawback I can foresee is drying time. I find I need to put enough on to 'puddle' properly but some of it's taking a while to dry.

Holy Hell is right!
I am going to start working on one of my Endos with these. MUCH easier than ALCLAD, Because I am a lazy *******.

...aaand here is the completely covered article. Dried just fine in the end. Bear in mind this is a 2" tall plastic NECA endo skull!

I suspect it won't deal that well with finger grease unless you clearcote over the top of it* but, man, what a finish.

Can't wait to strip down the rest and give it the treatment. I've ordered some base guitar strings to replace the body cables too.

*As already discussed earlier in this thread - given enough drying time and provided this is the last step in your paint process, it's fine. Plenty durable.

Sorry to keep posting but it looks like 1 x 2mm pen will do ALMOST an entire NECA 1/4 endo. lol

Lower legs and some pistons and ancillary pieces are yet to be painted (drawn, coloured, scribbled?)

You can see some streaking on the lower chest panel but overall I'm blown away with the ease of use and quality of this stuff.

What is the best base coat for this as do you need a primer or some pigmented paint coat to get the best shine and has anyone tried a clear over it. Wondering if it will kill the shine if cleared?

Awesome. And never be sorry to post.

The streaking doesn't take away from the application, but can be incorporated into the look very easily. These are war machines so don't need to look perfect. Will you weather it after you finish the chrome application?

Thanks Too Much Garlic. Sometimes I get enthused and just run away with a project like this. :)

I'm trying to incorporate any streaking into the 'build' of the pieces as I go. Make them look like milling marks, or whatever - but really, the overall impression is very striking.

Yes, I'll be adding weathering and hopefully a little heat damage and tempering - blue and orange tinting as you'd see on a car exhaust. Just like Stan and the crew did on the full-size Endo's.

Great_Bizarro: I read a post earlier in this thread that clear-coat does kill the shine. I'm not really prepping my pieces at all, just giving them a rub with Isopropyl and buff with a cloth. Best results are if the paint goes on thick and 'puddles'. It then takes about 12 hours to cure properly.

After the pieces are cured, how well do they stand up to handling? Do you notice a dulling of the effect? Is the surface malleable/susceptible to finger prints?

Once the paint is dry, it won't show fingerprint impressions, but if you purposely rub your finger across it a few times the finish does haze (so I'd assume normal handling will do so over time as well).

From quick tests, Future is the least bad clear coat option, but does affect the finish (my test was brushed-on; maybe airbrushed will be better?). Krylon clear will dull the finish more, but it still has a somewhat convincing un-polished aluminum look and reflectivity. Dupli-color (auto) lacquer clear eats it up a bit more and is not a good choice.

I would add as a caveat that it is not a durable coating. This is not a tough two-pack lacquer - it's a marker pen.

It is fairly fragile - even when cured, and will scratch off easily with a nail. BUT, for those of us who can't afford (or can't get hold of) more specialist coatings - it's fab. Once you get the hang of application you get an almost mirror finish without having to sand and prime for hours first.

I put my (unfinished) guy back together to get an overview of how the chrome looks. I'll have to take some pics in daylight too.

I'll second Great_Bizarro's question. I bought a Molotow pen based on the results I saw linked in this thread, and it looks great... right up until it's touched, or I attempt to clear-coat it. Even if I've let it cure for days (their website gives no information on cure time; just says "fast-drying").
