Re: Bandai Y-Wing - Base color question

It sure looks like Gold 2 (aka Tiger Sprockets, aka Alan Ladd Jr Y) see the yellow panel on the front

Re: Bandai Y-Wing - Base color question

Thats what I think as well although my eyes keep seeing red on the one in the back. It could just be a color shift thing.

Re: Bandai Y-Wing - Base color question

Very nice!

I assume it wil be black and white R2 dome? At one point it had a mostly grey R2 dome (probably unfinished) and in some of the movie shots (like the one earlier in this thread) there actually is no R2 unit. I'm not sure why they didn't fix that with the special editions

I remember coming across a thread somewhere that showed all the various astromech schemes for Red and gold squadron

For your other Y-Wings you might like these replacement guns or tiger sprocket part (for Gold 2)

Re: Bandai Y-Wing - Base color question

Thanks! Yes, B/W Dome. Im trying to figure out how to paint that little sucker. Guess its magnifying glasses and brush...ack

Re: Bandai Y-Wing - Base color question

The photo is a little unfocused, but your droid dome does look neatly painted. I know what you mean about going blind. Just this week I tried to paint the exact same R2 color scheme on my 1:144 y-wing. More than a few times I ended up cross-eyed.:)

Ok. Noobie here, I recently purchased three bandai kits. Tie interceptor, A-wing, and Y-wing. I'm new to models. Not new to airbrushing. I normally paint rc car bodies. www.mr-painting.com

Anyways, there are so many techniques that I don't understand the terms. How are you guys achieving the blaster marks, and "dirt" for lack of a better term? What is dry brushing? I'd like to stick to tamiya acrylics. Have a decent amount on order. That being said, I cannot do a wash over them, correct? I need to seal them first right? The Y-wings in this post are gorgeous.

I don't always need to seal my Tamiya, depends what I'm doing over it. I usually seal with a gloss coat before deacaling or washes however.

If airbrushing Tamiya you need a proper thinner. I mix my own with isopropyl alcohol + an acrylic retarder. I Mix about 3:2 paint go thinner ratio.

Clean up of Tamiya is easy with Windex or Simple Green cleaner.

For blaster marks I use paint to make a small center mark. then I use weathering powder mixed with a tiny bit of water to make a wash. I put that around the painted center mark in a tight pattern. The end result looks like a blast mark. I also use the weathering powder and water for my wash. I apply this wash at the very end. On my Y Wing almost all of the black / Grey weathering is made with this wash. Im a fan of using a wash in controlled small areas, not washing the entire model.

Dry brushing is simply taking almost all of the paint off of the brush and then using the brush to transfer an almost dry small amount of paint to highlights or lowlights of the model.

Hope that helps a little.

Another weathering technique I used on my Y-Wing was pre-shading. I applied a highly thinned coat of Tamiya NATO black to the entire built model first than airbrushed the topcoat allowing shadowed areas to remain darker. This adds lots of depth. Later, dry-brushing pops out details near the surface and high points.

I'm a bit of a newbie myself but here are some resources I used to start out. I primarily use mig oils to weather, love the flexibility of oils.

The Fichtenfoo millennium falcon series was huge for me.
