Very nice. What about having someone 3D print a new stand that would allow your stranded wire to run thru. It could be up to the builder to purchase it on Shapeways.
 
Managed to find some 0.7mm O/D stranded in an old mouse lead which will fit all the way through and be good for a few modules. Still can't find a good retail source though.
 
I'm just putting together a small batch of these modules.
Comes ready built & tested inc. fibre optic required for engines, and battery box. Video of the engine effect on my blog above.
Can also include static light if you want to have a go at lighting the windows, but fibre not provided for this.
Price is 20GBP / $27US plus shipping. Payment via paypal.
