Pete's Dragon (Post-release)

One of the reviewers I mostly trust (not on all things, but a good 60/70% of stuff) is John Campea - he reckons whilst it has a simple plot, simple characters and simple themes it works extremely well as a nice emotional journey, it isn't super deep but it isn't bland either, just a well made film that hits the right emotional notes. I freakin' loved How to train your Dragon for the same reasons, so I'll probably check this out if I get chance.

it's been a while since i've seen the original..

but i don't remember pete growing up homeless in the jungle. seems like someone saw what jungle book was doing and tried to copy it. at least thats what i think is happening in this one.

The CGI looks pretty bad in spots considering it's a disney film and fur? It looks like they crossed him with a cat.

These seem to be doing well enough, so I guess plenty of people are liking them.

For me though, the music was a huge part of the appeal of the originals. Plus the animation was world class on some of them.

Without that, the plot alone just isn't interesting enough for me. (Even though it looks like they scrapped pretty much everything except the kids name and that he has a dragon friend)

But to each their own.

Well, I suppose dragon lore sprung from the discovery of large ferocious looking skeletons, later to be realised as dino-bones,.....now we have discovered that dinosaurs had feathers,...so I suppose,....ah what the hell,....give the dragon fur

One film I wish they would remake (even as a live-action movie) is The Black Cauldron (based on the Chronicles of Prydain) I think it would make good material for a fantasy film if done right.

Wasn't Black Cauldron horribly adapted? I just picked up the book on clearance for $1, so I'm gonna read it, but Disney seems determined to get everyone to forget that the movie exists, even more than Song of the South!

I'll second this. I loved the Prydain books when I was a kid.
Never liked the cartoon, though. Not how I imagined the world and characters when I read the book.
These need to be live-action. And they need to start with "The Book of Three" and make it a proper trilogy ("The Black Cauldron" was the second book in the series).

I hope Disney is reading this...

Yes, it was. If you're reading "Black Cauldron", you're actually reading the second book, and will miss all the great character introductions from the first.
I've honestly only seen the Disney movie once, because I didn't like it. They tried to mash 3 books into one movie, and it didn't work.
Also much too light-hearted in tone. Don't get me wrong, the books are funny and cute and all that, but there's some pretty heavy stuff going down.
