Limited Run Accurate TFA kobold clip --- SECOND RUN OPEN!!!

Hey guys,

This is an interest thread for my TFA kobold clip.
Every clip is CNC machined from raw aluminum and comes with a D-ring.
The final price is 23 € with free international shipping.

I did my own research and believe this is the closest thing to the production used pieces that you can get your hands on, apart from the ones on the propshop replica. As reference I used still frames from TFA, as well as pictures of the propshop replica (which I believe is nearly identical to the one in the movie) and fine tuned the proportions until I was satisfied with it.

This is my latest prototype. The finished clip might use a different type of D-ring, because I’m not completely satisfied with my current one. I ordered a new batch of rings and will keep you updated.





A few things to note about the production used clip that I tried to replicate:

The production used kobold clip was almost certainly CNC machined “in-house“ for TFA. Because of this, the kobold clip on the TFA sabers is a bit more "stylized". It is missing some details and is a simplified version of it's predecessor, so to speak.

That's why the screw/rivet-holes were probably not countersunk... The original kobold flash had holes that were countersunk. It would be a pointless detail for the prop department to replicate, because the clip is mounted the other way around anyway. That's why the holes on my clip are lacking any countersinks.

The screen used clip is missing the two additional holes on the side. This can be seen in just one shot in the movie, when the stormtroopers are taking the lightsaber off of Finn outside of Maz Kanatas castle and I replicated that detail on my clips. There are NO holes apart from the ones for the screws and the D-ring!

The drilled holes for the D-ring are completely going through the entire width of the clip, just like on the propshop replica. That means the D-ring can slide from left to right and is fixed in place by the rivet or screw that attaches the clip to the bottom of the Graflex.

I hope you like the prototype and there is some interest from you guys.

It all depends on the CNC shop that is manufacturing the clips for me. I think it would take two to three weeks for them to machine the pieces, and another week or so for me to finish them. I also have to sort out some of the legal stuff before I can receive any payments. I hope I can ship them out before August ends, but I can't pinpoint an exact date right now. Sorry for the vague answer.

Slightly, yes. I believe it's somewhat flatter (0,05 mm or something. I will look it up later.), but width and length are virtually identical. I thought the screen used TFA clip was weirdly elongated at first, but that was mostly due to heavy lens-distortion in the Luke scenes (If you squish the screenshots horizontally, the Graflex stops looking weird as well). The true proportions are much closer to an original clip, I believe.
