R5 in Carbonite (RIC)

Thanks guys!

Almost done with the droid part of this. I scratch built a pair of feet according to how much will be showing. I had a couple AA face pieces for the fronts, but the rest is just scrap wood I had lying around. I've only got one set of harnesses right now, but another pair is On the way.

And here he is in his current state. Still need a few details ( under shoulder details, buttons and about 1" of the ankle cylinder will be showing) but it's coming along.

Next stage of this build is to start blending it into the Carbonite.

The first step was to fill in all the gaps with liquid nails panel adhesive. Took about 4 tubes of it to go all the way around, but we got there. That guy is rock solid in place now.

Next up is bondo. I caked it on there with a putty knife and then used my hands ( rubber gloves of course) to spread it around and give it some texture.

Then sanded it with my electric sander.

I still need to get in there and sand some of it by hand. There's places where the orbital sander wouldn't reach and I want to smooth it out some more.

I've seen some HIC builds that go very drastic with the bondo texture and then all of a sudden it's smooth Carbonite. I think it should blend it's way there and not be an obvious transition seam.

I also added some texture to the droid itself. I did this with liquid nails, rubber gloves and a feather duster. If you look at the HIC's, most of Han has a medium to rough texture. It also helps with the weathering and gives the black wash something to adhere to.

I'm still on the fence about having the Carbonite drip off the hoses. I think it's a great look the way Han has that on his hands, but I'm not sure it will have the same effect on the hoses.

I am just freaking out! This is such a great concept, and as always perfect execution!

Thanks! I'm a pretty big fan of your work as well. It took me awhile to put two and two together, but we were at Celebration together with the R2 Builders and I'm kicking myself for not introducing myself and talking shop with you and your dad.

Oh well, I'm sure Anaheim will roll around again ( in 2019 I hope)

Oh man you're kidding me, what a bummer. Yeah it would have been great to meet you. That happened a lot to me on that trip. It seems like Disney will be doing it more often, so we'll definitely catch up next round.

Keep it up brother this is great stuff!

Not terribly exciting, but an update none the less...

Working on the end plugs. Rather than throw a couple hundred bucks at the kits out there, I decided to scratch build them out of scrap wood and styrene.

I first took some 1/8" MDF and traced my openings directly from my frame. Then I started adding ribs to go all the way around each opening.

After all the ribs are in place, I took some cheap "For Rent" signs and cut them into 4" strips. These will be skins over the ribs and be what you see when you look into the openings. I had to seam them in a couple places, but that will easily be covered with some bondo and love

Used spray adhesive to attach the skins and then liquid nails from behind at all of the spaces and curves.

So the plan is this... What you see in this picture is the panels actually laying face down. The next step is to trim the excess height of the skins and then put a solid 1/2" back on. Then I will flip it over and flush trim out my panel openings. After a little clean up, it will be ready to mount in the box

Greedo i used plastic salad cooler inserts from the restaurant for my plugs just another idea for future builds lol. they cost like $12 for all 3.

Thanks guys!

and Brian... I may have to talk you out of a set of those when I do my standard HIC. Those look good

Small update. I Decided to cut out some rings to go in the back of the plug openings. This will create that lip that can be seen in the back on the screen used ones.

Then inserted them and nailed in place

I forgot to take pictures of the next few steps, but I basically just mounted another MDF back over th plug openings seen above , flipped it over, drilled a big hole to get my router bit in there and flush trimmed out the holes to make the front.

Here it is mounted in place and bondo drying

And decided one last layer of glue. I now have the entire surface covered. I guess I'll be painting Sunday
