Anyone going?

I'll be there all three days helping out the Geeks With Scissors girls and just hanging out in general. Friday I'll be part of a Buffy group (James Marsters is a guest this year) as Darla, Saturday I'll be Dagobah Luke and Sunday is still up in the air. I'm excited about the Buffy group because it lets me do more sculpting of some vamp forehead prosthetics which, for some weird reason, is a fun thing for me.

I'll most definitely be there this year, price be damned.

Currently finishing up a raiden costume (mortal kombat), then I'll be rushing a taskmaster project together.

Against my better judgment, I'll most likely be going Sunday if only to my 8 year old niece (and probably her cousins - 10 & 11) a pic with Billie Piper.

I can't stress enough how disgusted I am with the people that run this show and hope for a better con to hit Detroit.

JD, where in MI are you located? There are a couple of newer, smaller shows that are getting some footing that having more attendance at this early in the game will help them get solidified so they can grow. MCCC has had decades of being the only game in town and that's what allows them to grow and sustain despite their horrible business practices.

The ones that come to mind are based in Taylor, Mount Pleasant (I think), Grand Rapids and there's one that's starting this year in July in Lincoln Park. The Lincoln Park one is super small right now, but quite a few of the people involved in it have solid business plans and drive so I can forsee good things coming from it in the future. There is also one in Monroe that is in the third or so year that has gotten to be pretty large for a new small-town convention and they have good business practices and have been wonderfully upfront about everything behind the scenes. I hate the MCCC is the only one right now to go to for bigger guests, but as a community we can change that by supporting the other conventions.

May i ask what motor city has done that was so horrible? I've only been attending for a few years now, this is the first I've heard of such brewing hatred.

I'm in Sterling Heights - I've been keeping my eye on some of the smaller shows that seem to be picking up steam.

A lot of it was detailed in last years thread.

We used to film my Trek series in your backyard over in Warren at 16 and Dequindre!
That's actually Sterling Heights or Troy - depending on which side of Dequindre you were on. Warren ends at 14 Mile and Dequindre is the border of Macomb/Oakland counties. My gym is a mile west of there at 16 and John R.

I'm hoping they announce the details of the Photo Ops for MCCC soon.

If you booked the convention hotel through a third party booking site, you may want to call to confirm. A friend of mine called to check on her reservation to see what time check-in was and they had no record of it. Turns out the company booked the WRONG hotel that has a similar name. After she posted about it, a couple other people checked and the same thing happened to them. Just an FYI!

Trying to book the Billie Piper Photo Op for my nieces and nephew (the youngest of which is a huge Rose fan)... and of course the site they use is not using a secure connection.

I've never done a Photo Op before. I plan on letting the 3 of them get their pics taken as a group - which I don't think will be a problem as they allow 2 kids and 2 adults, I'm hoping they'll let the nephew pass as an adult in this case and they'll let me escort them in as they're just kids.

I still think $60 for a photo is ridiculous.

It's surprising their site even works, it's down more often than not.

I haven't done the photo ops there but I've heard that they run fairly smoothly for the most part. The company that does the photo ops can be lenient sometimes on the stuff. My one friend and her husband had all three kids in the picture last year for example.

Here are some shots from yesterday in the News Herald:

Yeah, that might be me with Yoda in the first picture.

They tend to get a higher percentage of cancellations, especially near last minute, than any other convention.

Saturday was surprisingly not that bad for traffic. It was pretty packed inside. They still haven't figured out a good configuration.

Sunday, at least half the media guests were gone at like 1 PM. The convention was 10-5. Lots of people were pissed that they waited in a long line, paid a chunk of change and got inside just to find out the person they were there to see was gone already.

I did hear a rumor that they're going to sell to Wizard World.
