Starship Tug Miranda

From design to execution, I really like this piece. The detail you added all looks like it would serve a practical "real world" purpose rather than just being slapped on for no reason. It's funky and utilitarian and lived in, and looks like a studio model ready for filming. Really strong work! (y)thumbsup

Many thanks. That was the idea of going old school on this build. I learned a long time ago from the masters that when you kit bash parts from model kits you need to make them functional and serve a purpose. It's not as easy as one may think, lots of thought goes into placement.

Up to this point in the construction of Miranda the scale was still to be determined since there wasn't anything on her that would indicate it's scale to real life objects. Now that I got to the point of working on the cockpit I decided to make it 1/35 scale due to the figures I used for the crew. So everything that pertained to the interior now also had to be made to match the figures. The cockpit interior was scratch built and difficult to create so it would fit into the Dustbuster vacuum. There is also an air lock that is divided from the cockpit with a bulkhead and hatch. An exterior outer air lock hatch was also added.

I lit the cockpit and main engines and forward navigation. Other than I have zero knowledge in miniature lighting and not wanting to over complicate the lighting with circuit boards and soldering, I went with a simple solution. I used battery operated LED Christmas lights. I think they worked pretty well for this project.

The more I see, the more I like it. The juxtaposition of the "historically dressed" figures and the overall futuristic tech look of the craft they're in really works for me, and the figure standing casually with his hands in his jacket pockets seals the deal; just another day at the office. Brilliant!

Thanks, I went for that grungy, well used look using a mesh of both high and low tech. Love the movie Alien for inspiration. I painted, weathered and added decals to the cockpit in this series of photos.

Here I added the clear cockpit glass to the cockpit. I also finished the lighting and did the final test fitting to the ship to make sure everything fit well.
