Fallout 4 Laser Musket (Pic Heavy)

The Laser Musket has been finished!
I’m going to be posting all the final pictures between today and tomorrow.
But first, I wanted to cover some of the painting process.






Last I left off, all the parts had been made, and I was starting paint and final assembly. I went back to each part and sanded away all my seam from the molds and filled any air bubbles. From there, there were parts that needed holes drilled for bolts, lights and shafts.
From there, I began priming and painting. Before I painted the stock, I sprayed it with a heavy coat of Duplicolor heavy filler primer, and dragged a chip brush through it, giving the stock a physical wood texture. I then based it out and decanted Design Master glossy wood tone to grain it.
All the rusted parts were based with black and layered with acrylic paints, then dry brushed with metallic silver on the edges. The laser barrel, grip and muzzle are all painted with Tamiya spray paints.
Everything was also hit with a black wash to even the tones and add some wear.
The lettering around the lenses was done using a sheet of dry transfer decals. All the windings around the coils and the rotor core had to be done by hand with brass wire.
My next post is going to be of the fully assembled gun! It’ll be in two parts, given the amount of detail this thing has, it’ll take a lot of picture to cover. But I’m going to skip the explanation of the assembly process; its not terribly exciting.

I can't take all the credit for the paint! A co-worker and good friend of mine is a master painter (of all things), and he was able to give me a ton of great pointers on painting this thing just right!

He was the one to suggest doing a physical wood texture with polyprimer, I just modified his idea and attempted it with filler primer, with great results.

Hey everyone, a couple quick updates to the Laser Musket!

Since, I managed to the Musket done in time for Comic Con International, so I quickly threw together a Fallout 4 cosplay to match. I decided to go with the Minuteman General, since it is much faster to do than the Vault suit, plus, everyone wants to do a Vault Suit! I really enjoyed this cosplay, and I want to take the time to improve it for the next convention. I only had a week to get this costume done, so there is plenty of room for improvement.




As for the musket, I decided to improvise a sling for it. It weighs nearly 10 pounds, so carrying around the Con would have been a nightmare. I based the sling off an old revolutionary musket’s so that it wouldn’t look out of place. Plus, in some of the minutemen quest icons, the Vault Boy's Musket clearly has a strap. The strap itself is made from real leather, and it was attached with some nylon strapping hardware. It gives it both the revolutionary war look and the kludged post apocalyptic look that the rest of the gun has. I don't have a good up close picture of it at the moment, but it seems to match the costume pretty well.



I also posted the video before showing the lights and sounds, but what I did not mention is that the gun is completely rechargeable! The laser barrel was the perfect place to store electronics, but there wasn't a great way to put batteries into the gun and still have access to them. I would have needed to make the laser muzzle removable, but there is a lot of weight at the front of the gun, so I would have had to use somewhat obvious screws. My solution was to use rechargeable batteries, and seal the thing closed. I imply left access to a micro usb port under the laser barrel next to the speaker. It's nearly impossible to see unless you're looking for it.

Hey guys, as you probably expect, I'm trying to build my own laser musket, with as little 3-d printing as possible. I need a laser rifle fore grip and long barrel(if you don't know, it looks like laser rifles were scrapped to make the muskets) . Or something that looks extremely similar. I'll build these if i have to, I'm just printer-illiterate, And i don't have one. Also, where can i get the gears for the crank? I'm okay if you want to sell any of these parts to me, I just can't print them myself.

If you're looking to scratch build a musket, you've come to the right place! The only part of my gun I printed was the rotor claws, everything else was handmade. The bulk of the build, including the laser barrel and grip, were done with foamed pvc sheets. For mine, the gears where actually casings I made off of a pair of chuck keys. They look great, but if you plan on using them to actually turn the rotors, they're not the most efficient. They don't fully mesh. You'd be better of with true bevel gears for that.

Unfortunately, right now I'm only offering my gun as a completed kit, not parted out.

Thanks, I watched your video, Great build by the way. Just so you guys know, I'm trying to not make it look like the standard game model. I Want to make it look like it was thrown together in a post apocalyptic enviroment, not that yours doesnt, it look like it could be used in a Fallout movie. But I want mine to have problems, be different but still have the general look of a laser musket, like instead of the 1st and 3rd rortors having 12 coils, mine might have 20 or so. I might buy your kit whenever i have enough money, it looks fantastic. So anyway, I'm trying to do this under $100 so as you can imagine i haven't made much progress with the IRL equivalent of the rotors being $93 each. thanks for letting me know about the gears Props N.

Great work! If you still need a way to fire up the lights and sound when turning the crank, you can rig up one of those cheap hand-wound emergency USB chargers from EBay. They only put out about 3V so hook it up to a relay or mosfet so it doesn't power the lights/sounds directly, just turns them on when spun.

By the way, I finished off your Fusion Core kit today! Truly an awesome kit, and incredibly easy to assemble. I can't wait to tackle the mini nuke. Though I'm not gonna get to start it for another few days.

Hey everyone! I’ve got one final update on my Laser Musket!
Shortly after finishing the musket, and selling off a few of the kits, I decided to build a nice display stand for my own build. It turned out very nice, I just never really got around to posting the pictures. So I figure its finally time I get around to sharing it!



Anyway, it was a pretty simple build. The board is a piece of 1″ x 6″ walnut. I put a 45 on the corners and routed the edge with an ogee bit, then sealed with a clear urethane. The uprights are 1/2″ steel rods with a 1/8″ x 3/4″ piece of strap steel to form the cradle. The cradles are both slightly oversized to fit a foam pad for the gun to rest on.


That’s the last news I’ll have on the musket build (I think!), but I’ve been really happy with the way this whole project has turned out.
