My 1:1 BB-8 on a budget

I decided I wanted to build a BB-8 and I didn't want to spend the money on a 3D printed like many are on the BB8 Builders club. So I've spent about $30 so far and I think I have everything I need for the head. I started with a $22 Globe that I bought at Walmart. I pencilled in the lines after looking at lots of photos and figuring out all the panel dimensions. 12484807_10207194511853829_2107322140931415721_o.jpg

I dremelled all the panels out and cut out all the holes. Except for the logic displays but I'll get to those. Kind of a pain. There is a fine line between etching and melting the plastic. I just took my time. A little different from etching my aluminum dome I did for my R2D2 years ago.

I found a cheap toothbrush holder at walmart for $1.88 and decided I could use it for the start of BB8's radar eye. Just needed to do some more dremel work. Pretty happy with the way this turned out.

I started to work on the base of the head. I found some cheap plastic plates at walmart for about $3. They also had some ridges on them which I thing will help with the look of the base. I'll have to dremel some more details as well as build it up but I think this is a good start.

Yes. I saw that. Pretty amazing. I am just going to build a static one. I don't want to spend to much money or time.

I thought that the ball for the body came out pretty good even though it was paper mache, any ideas yet on how you'll do yours?

Not sure yet. I might try the beach ball method with fiberglass or I might just get a 20" Polycarbonate Light Globe. I'll worry about that after I get further along on the head.

Haven't posted in a while. Here is my BB8 Body. It is a polycarbonate globe with all the details dremelled in. Took a while, but I love the look. I just didn't want to do the decals. This feels more real to me. Still have a little more weathering to do.

Definition of scratch-built.
Looks amazing.
Anychance we could some closeup of your line work?
Would like to see more detail of the work you've put in.
Robert

Also, could you share what globe you used for the "head"?
Wouldnt mind picking one up and giving it a try.

Here is a close up. Not as clean as a printed one, but I did it freehand so I'm pretty happy with it. Besides, as soon as you take a step back you can't even tell how rough some of the lines are.
