My "8 foot" Star Destroyer Build

Re: My "8 foot" Star Destroyer Build

#1 is Hornet or Enterprise, cant remember which one, it's been a long time but I think part #3 is from the Revell Massachussets.

Part #3 is also used in the hull trench (rear)

Is this the 1/720 scale Massachusetts ?

Hey bwayne64 - yes, it is the 1:720 MA.
Just got it the other day. I'll be putting scans up (along with a few more) in the scans sticky.

Note this stuff is all just loosely set on a template to test measurements....nothing glued.

Thanks Man, looking good there. Can't wait to see the big beasty in all its glory, Cheers,

My pleasure, Joe.

Happy I could help! And seeing this thing....you and me both! ;)

Liking your progress on this. Thanks for all the kit scans you've added! I need to get off my but and do the same.

Small update:

I made a foam-board mock up of the bridge to get a feel for the dimensions and to see if it 'looks' right.
I'll try to tackle the 'neck' next. For me, determining these dimensions has been the most challenging part so far.
Are things looking right to you guys?

The neck on this thing is a pain in mine!
Such a strange shape, getting the measurements right is a challenge.

I'm trying to ID a part on the back/top of the neck. It looks like a deck piece from a larger Carrier kit. (I found it - see edit)
I have checked:
Revell USS Coral Sea
Revell USS Roosevelt
Revell USS Midway
Hasegawa Akagi

Obviously there is a kit I'm missing (among others);

Any help would be awesome!

EDIT - Ok, I found the part. It was not one of the 'bigger ones' after all. The scale can be deceiving in these pics. For anyone's reference, it is the Tamiya 1:700 Taiho.

You're doing great man! Yeah, that neck is a pain in terms of measurements, but it seems fine to me. I'm sure the specialists on the board will chime in it needs some tweaking.

Man oh man do I want a "kit" of this! I would pay a few thousand dollars if it was complete... just a suggestion... set aside a copy of each part you use... and partner with a garage kit caster and offer pre-sales! I will NEVER find the time to do the research you are doing... but doing a build up would be a dream come true! I have a laser cutter, and would be willing to do some cuts for you if you do the Corel artwork for them... I have 18" x 24" inch cutting area... PM sent

Thank you joberg - the encouragement always helps! Sometimes it seems like a long, endless road...and I've barely started ;)

The bridge looks good so far, however the only way to know if it's right is putting all the parts on It (maybe blue tak to check if everything fits).

Thanks Julien - I have placed a lot of the parts on the face and sides and it seems to look ok. Still have to check out the back and bottom. I find I get so bogged down in trying to get it perfect that my progress slows to a snail's pace.

Hey drewid142, Interesting idea, but it would be quite an undertaking to put a kit of this together. I have been casting a lot of the parts already because I don't want to 'break up' all the kits I now have, but I am beginning to waver on that strategy because it is much more time consuming to first cast the part, then place it. not to mention the growing collection of molds I have :p
Anyway - thank you for the laser-cutting offer. I will most certainly keep that in mind if and when I get that far!
BTW - I did not receive a PM from you...

Came in to find this today. I guess it fell off the bench and ended up here.
I hope it is not a bad omen....:confused

Wow, that is freaky. Could have been worse, could have been your hand, ouch ! I think I would rethink my tool storage process, ;) Or wear a steel hard hat while in your shop, LoL . Love this project. I think you and Julien are the only ones working on this monster. Cheers,

Joe

What? Isn't a 12" Chef's blade the tool everyone uses to trim kit-bash parts? :lol
Seriously, I was using it to level the clay I use for castings. Perhaps not the best tool, but it was handy.

I've been trying to cast some parts from the Revell Coral Sea - namely the deck parts. It is such a spendy kit, I'd rather not chop it up. It is proving to be a challenge so I may have to sacrifice that one...

I know I am making this build many times more difficult with the casting, but (so far) I find pouring rubber and resin therapeutic.

Finally got some big sheets of styrene today so I'll most likely start on the 'real' bridge shortly.

The Coral Sea Bridge and Hornet 'side' castings came out usable:

Edit:
Casting of the Coral Sea Deck edge which makes 2 bridge face parts. Came out pretty well I think:
