Thanks for the compliment....and believing I'm not a noobie myself! If you look at my approach in the beginning until now, I've definitely learned a LOT since then. Heck, my go to materials were foam board and balsa, lol.
Now that I've been exposed to styrene and other materials, I think I'm improving a bit.

There is no shortage of talented individuals here at the RPF ! I'm learning from them too !

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Ive got three more wings to build as you can see im trying to build duplakits of my parts so i don't have to later . And i will have to start thinking about making molds for my engines and my lazer cannons as well .Then i come on your page 2day and see your work on your cockpit cant wait to start that as well . Im going to be lighting up the cockpit and the engines any recomendations on lighting kits? I think you recomended Ic 2000 to glue the 2 difrent plastics 2gether correct? The toy plastic and the evergreen plastic from hobbie store.

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Cool, you've covered some ground fast ! You'll probably finish before me !

I found some really cool led kits to run fiber optics to. I'll post the link later.

I've been so busy, I haven't made too much progress on the cockpit, but I do have an update coming soon.

Right now I'm up $400 on the black jack table, so gotta go ! ♠

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Do you have the dementions of the main blocks of wood for the x part of the wing as well as the add on pieces ?

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

The added pieces the 15 degree ones i need more info on how to make those. The length , I got some of what i need from your pics but in some it looks like you did something to the 15 degree blocks later in the build.and if you have more pics of how the wings attach to the blocks ? And for the engines what brand of mold making did you use and what liquid plastic for parts ?Thanks Troy

I went back threw your pics. and saw you used wooden dowels to mount the wing so that answers that question.

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Yeah Troy, I kind of messed that up....I should have thought about supporting the wings early in my build. I ended up using wooden dowels on the bottom since there wouldn't be as much stress. The top wings, I used aluminum rods for greater rigidity and support since there will be more stress holding the wings upwards. I would recommend some type of aluminum or metal angle iron to complete this task. Also, if you could support 2 wings all the way through might be better...i.e. top right attached to bottom left.

Anyway, good luck and may the force be....nah, lol

***Small Update***

Haven't had much time to work on this X-Wing lately but here's the latest.

I have to completely finish the interior of the cockpit, Luke, and wire it for LED's so I can assemble the 2 halves of the fuselage.

Looking at repainting the helmet and I realized there was no way I could hand paint the details and have it look good.

Hopped on Illustrator and created some graphics

20160626_130823.jpg 20160626_134231.jpg

Printed them out on clear decal paper and sealed them with Dullcoat

20160626_135613.jpg

Hand painted what I could and applied decals

20160626_180057.jpg 20160626_183617.jpg 20160626_183641.jpg 20160626_184451_001.jpg 20160626_185742.jpg 20160626_185749.jpg 20160627_183613.jpg

worked on building out the inside of the cockpit

20160704_143414.jpg 20160704_144815.jpg 20160704_144940.jpg

Again, there is SO MUCH detail at this scale, I'm looking at decals to pull this off and then paint and weather it to make it a little more realistic. I contacted IzzyMel and he was cool enough to let me use a little of his work for reference. The rest, I looked at movie stills.

20160709_181544.jpg 20160715_163524.jpg 20160716_095013.jpg

I measured the parts and then duplicated them in scale. This time I printed them out on regular paper to check sizing and accuracy.

More to come soon.

Thanks for looking.

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

**Another Quick One***

I cut out the locations for the screens to be designed and install later...***** IF ANYONE HAS ANY RECOMMENDATIONS ON HOW TO MAKE THE SCREENS, PLEASE LET ME KNOW****

Printed out the decals, coated, and allowed to dry. Then applied to the appropriate pieces.

20160716_142707.jpg 20160718_205909.jpg 20160719_161144.jpg

Checking the fit and look.

20160719_161302.jpg 20160719_161308_001.jpg

Although, I like all the small details, I'm not a huge fan of decals and would much rather paint. I'm going to try to weather what I have here and if that doesn't look right, I try to paint over and weather. We'll see....

20160719_161523.jpg 20160719_162246.jpg 20160719_162300.jpg 20160719_162411.jpg

In the meantime, I did not like the interior of the engines looked. Redesigned them as well as getting the LED's installed.

Worked on building one good one to mold and duplicate.

20160714_212450.jpg 20160714_212716.jpg 20160714_213335.jpg 20160716_143544.jpg

Didn't have anything on hand so, I picked up some Amazing Cast Resin from the local Michaels.

20160716_144059.jpg 20160716_145635.jpg 20160716_155925.jpg 20160717_122534.jpg

and molded a few.....

20160718_130505.jpg 20160718_202117.jpg 20160718_183017.jpg

So here is the order of the engines. The obscured smoky plastic came from small dividers in a plastic case I had. The distance of the LED set back lights the entire circle, diffuses and softens the light.(Pic's next post of it lit)

Thanks for checking it out !

Be back shortly with some more updates. Again, if anyone has a good idea on how to build the cockpit screens, I'd love to hear from you !

Thanks !

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Have you considered making slide film prints of your 'screen' artwork? You can print the artwork onto glossy paper, tape to a wall with some offset lighting, then shoot it with a digital camera & take it to a print service for transfer onto film (or just shoot with a film camera! ) Tricky part is determining the correct distance to get the correct size on the film, which may take some experimentation to get right though once worked out, you have it for future projects.

This is all aimed at backlighting with an LED, btw.

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Thanks for your tip rbeach84 ! That sounds great and I'll definitely have to research that. I'm going to experiment with a few other ideas first but that may be my go to.

I'm going to try it with a layered approach to see how it looks using colored translucent plastic sheets. I may be able to print the black parts on clear water slide decals and let the colored sheets shine through.

We'll see, I'll post some samples when I can.

Thanks !
