Deadpool Costume Build (movie version)

I've been lurking the forums for over a year, and decided to finally create an account. I'm new to the scene. This will be my first costume. I have zero experience with fabricating props and costumes. I'm more of a car guy, function over form mentality, so this should be fun.

My buddy invited me to his wedding. He and his wife decided they wanted to do a comic book themed wedding. So this gives me a good excuse to build the costume like I always wanted to! I've been searching high and low for everything. I'm going to try to get as close to the movie costume as I can, within my budget. I have until September to get everything together. So far I have ordered the mask from IllustraStudios and the jacket/pants from CostumeReplicaCave (TestEagle here on the RPF) both on Etsy. Here's a couple of generic pictures, and once I get the items in the mail, I'll post them on here.

BlackKaos also has a buckle that I'm trying to get as well.

Everything else, I've been hunting online to try to track down. Unfortunately I'm on a US military base overseas so my local options are limited. I did manage to find a leather shop here that I'm going to commission for the leather shin guards. My biggest concern is going to be the katana sheath for the back. I'd really like to find something like he uses in the movie. I haven't been able to find anything like it yet, but I've only been searching for a few days.

Lastly, I'm considering "weathering" the costume to match closer to the movie costume. I noticed in a picture I found that the movie costume is a bright red (saw part of the mask that tucks into the collar of the jacket which is bright and clean). But I'm not sure exactly how to weather it. I'm assuming some sort of black powder, brushed onto it should do the trick. But I don't want it to come out looking dumb. Anyone have any ideas?

Look forward to posting more progress pictures once everything starts rolling in! Thanks everyone!

Thanks. He only has the leather one on eBay currently.

Re: Deadpool (movie version)

So I've been doing some soul searching, and because I'm a little bit crunched for time (end of September deadline), a few things won't be as accurate as I'd like.

Today I picked up this black nylon quick release web belt (similar to what law enforcement uses) from eBay, and these drop leg holsters from Etsy (they come with dummy handguns so it was a deal I didn't want to pass up).
I also picked up this coyote tan drop leg ammo pouch. For the tan belt I went with a coyote tan military quick release web belt. Lastly, I snagged this metal Deadpool belt buckle from Shapeways. It's unfinished so I'll have to paint it myself. I chose to go with metal rather than plastic to ensure longevity and repeated use.

In a couple weeks I'm going to pick up this back holster for the dual katanas from Shapeways.

Pics below and input welcome!

Re: Deadpool (movie version)

So for whatever reason, my order for the drop leg mag pouches didn't go through, and I couldn't find the original post. Must have been sold out before I could purchase it. So I ended up getting these instead. I also found a rubber tactical bayonet with sheath. I've searched all afternoon and couldn't find a suitable rubber replica to match his, but it'll do in a pinch.

I've been reading up on weathering for the suit. I'm thinking of going with charcoal dust. I think that will be the best bet to get that dirty look. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Re: Deadpool (movie version)

So I found another thread, that I wish I had found before I started my spending spree. And after some internal deliberation, I think what I will do is initially build the suit for this wedding and afterwards go through and modify things as necessary to make it as screen accurate as I can. I guess this is all just a learning process. I'll post up some more pictures of what I've found and has been ordered. I'm already getting emails that things have been shipped and I'll get more photos up once they arrive!

Re: Deadpool (movie version)

Just got an email that ShapeWays cannot do the metal buckle. Looks like I'm going to have to go with the plastic type material.
Also ordered a pair of Nike SFB's, a pair of fingerless tactical gloves and a pair of ringers gloves. Also 1 yard of red 500d cordura. I plan on attempting to build the gloves out of these materials and see how it turns out. Pics below.

So I've been doing all sorts of researching online in regards to "weathering." Unfortunately, I don't know exactly what words to use to properly Google what I'm looking for. If you look closely in any of the set pictures, Deadpool's suit appears to be a dark red. However, in several pictures where you can see him either putting on or taking off his mask or gloves you can see that his suit was originally a brighter shade of red. Obviously his suit is dirty, or "weathered."

My suit will be red cordura. I don't want it to be super torn up, but I do want it to be dirty. I don't want to just run around outside rolling around on the ground. I want something more permanent. My first thought was charcoal powder, but apparently it doesn't stick around for very long and gets all over everything you touch. I've also read that tempera paint eventually rubs off too.

Can anyone point me in the right direction or offer any advice?

Here's a couple of examples of the color difference of his suit. Check out around the neck of the mask, and the fabric near his wrists.

I'm going to have to figure out a way to make the shin guards myself. Turns out the leather shop near me wont even attempt to make them or the fingerless portion of the gloves. Guess I'll have to figure it out myself, which will end up being more rewarding.

Received some items in the mail and I got pouches finished today. I couldn't find the exact fastener used, I applied a temporary fix. It'll do in the mean time. I started assembling some of the parts to see how it all fits together. I may end up dying the web belt and nylon pouches. The belt isn't the color I was expecting. And initially was going to use the nylon pouches for the leg below the drop holster. Also, the straps for the knife holster will be fixed. I just wanted to see if it'll fit. Obviously the drop leg holster attaches to a black belt, but it hasn't arrived in the mail yet. Also the Nike boots came in, they're a little snug but will have to do.

Again, that's just me hooking stuff up to see how it all fits. Nothing permanent yet.

TestEagle also sent me pictures of my suit that I ordered. Unfortunately there were pockets accidentally added to the jacket, so those are being taken out. He said it should be mailed out in a couple of days. Pretty excited!

Thats a strong start! I would kill for a good deadpool movie suit, but for one thing my physique is lacking, as deadpool is pretty ripped. Probably going to enter the world of screenprinting fabric suits with TASM 2, right once i finish my Mark 3 armor. Good luck to you!

Thanks! I think I may try to make another suit myself sometime. I have some ideas in my head and I'd like to see how they turn out. There's another guy on here, Deadpoolx07, he might have found the real deal movie fabric (Kaufman Bisou stretch pique red). Or at least he's really close. Might be worth looking in to for your idea.

Today I picked up about a square meter of red cow skin leather for the shin guards. My plan is to make a fiberglass "core" and wrap it in the leather.

Now I'm just enjoying some coffee and doing more research! I think I found a more accurate boot rather than the Nike SFB chukka's. I found these generic Chinese boots that mimic the lines and employ a side zipper. The Nike boots I bought don't have a side zipper. The only problem is the soles, they don't match. Oh well, c'est la vie.

The movie suit is amazing.
Knowing what to Google and what options are out there is half the battle. You seem to be doing a good job researching. This should turn out well.

I appreciate it. And you're right, knowing what to Google really is half the battle! My brain is numb from reading so much for the past 2 or 3 weeks. I've been wanting to do this for at least the 2 years and now I finally am. I really hope it turns out good and not hokey.

Oh and thanks to my wife, who works in the medical field, gave me some really advice on what to use for the "skeleton" of the shin guard. It's called Ortho-Glass cast wrap. Just add water and it hardens like a cast!

I am getting some help from someone who lives nearby and is an experienced costume builder for theater productions. She's talking about using watered down fabric paint and a sponge. We'll see!
