Ogre Bust WIP

I've been working on an Ogre bust for someone for a while inbetween running my business teaching SFX to adults and kids. The person the bust was for gave me a rough sketch with an idea as to what they would like for the Ogre.

Currently it is still in the sculpting stage with the back of the head missing plastiline. It is still missing skin textures so is looking very extreme and smooth and the left hand side hasn't been worked on like the right with all the wrinkles and muscle deifintion.

Once completed I will be moulding the sculpture out of fibreglass as a multipiece mould, as a multi piece Herculite mould would be a complete pain and way too haevy to pour latex out of. The bust will be latex and foam....preferably a cold cure foam.....something along the lines of Bently's Chemicals Jfoam 162.

QUESTION: UK members, where is great and good value for acquiring large volumes, 5 litres and above, on soft prop making foam for busts and such?

Also apologies that the photos are the wrong orientation. Does anyone know how to adjust/fix this? There is no orientation button in the blog post menu.

So It's still very rough. The left ear needs tweaking to match the right. The client wanted a Rhino horn in the middle. I've added it one to get a sense of scale, but will be making it smaller. I also need to get it to match and feel that it fits the head better. The chest and neck/bust edges are still to be widened. Plus a load of skin textures and pores.

Eventually when made, it will have a beard and I think an ogre made earring with some subtle tribal/ogre suitable tattoos.

It has been and still is a big challenge with the muscle structure and anatomy especially with the snarling expression. When I have done sculpts in the past they have been for prosthetics that have not needed such expression. It has been a massive learning curve so far. And there is still a lot of tweaking to go!

It looks amazing so far! So much character.

As for your foam question, I'm not located in the UK currently, but check out Mould Life, Neill's Materials, or Bentley Advanced Materials. All of them are fantastic suppliers, and should carry a few different foams.

Really nice expressions! Love it!

and about the orientations of the photos, try:
change orientations of the photos on your computer to wrong orientations -> save -> change to right orientations -> save -> upload

helped for me at least :)

OGRE UPDATE.

The other side has had details blocked out, and it now has a back smoothed down ready for muscle detail. I have also extended his shoulders on the bust. There's still some refining on the face to do, some bits are a wee bit uneven and fine textures and details to be added.

I'm still playing around with the horn texture. I don't know whether to go for rough textured or smooth? I was thinking rough as the Ogre itself even with pore texture will quite smooth looking and would be a nice contrast.

I'm also going to add some inner ear details too

Included a video to give an idea of scale too. A lot of clay in this guy! At least two rolls of plastiline.

UPDATE

Here is a wee update

The sculpt is now finished! And I have started the fibreglass moulding...I can smell the resin drifting up from my garage right now.

Mould will be about 7 parts. Currently fibreglassing the brute and will be looking into foam for backing the latex bust.

I am putting two layers of gel coat on to pick up and fill all the tricky details. The 2nd layer has talc powder to make a paste, this will make it easier to apply the chopstrand over the sculpt.

Hoping to have it finished this week, Trimmed and bolted too. Then will leave for a week or so to fully settle/cure and leave bolted together so it doesn't warp.

PROJECT UPDATE

Took a while to mold the chap in 6 pieces due to the rainy wet english weather, was also awful to clean the mould out just due to the details.

So that was the sculpt. Now I had to do one piece for someone as it was for a client. The colour scheme and look I have for my intended chappy is a lot different to the one that I completed for the client.

Here is the one based on the clients particular design specifications

His name is UROG. Latex and polyfoam, with custom glass eyes.

I will be doing another one to my own design specifications. This one will be m ore grey, yellows and flesh colours with more skin mottling. It will have some hair but not as much, and more mohawk like and tribal. I will also be constructing some EVA foam armour to attach to the Ogre. I will also bulk up the torso so there is more to work with.

Currently the latex skin for the second one is in the fibreglass mould waiting for Mouldlife's Procell foam....which is a beautiful foam! I will take more pics of the process of the artwork stages....I didn't with the last one as I was under a tight deadline.

Cheers Escher. Yeah the client's own sketch was an ugly brute. I tried to stay away from the usual green. Would be great to paint a few of these up a few different ways. Any other suggestions on good colour schemes for Ogres?

Red or Blue pigmented skin comes to mind for something a little different. I think that would give the feeling he (it?) is a magic user or dabbles in the arcane (with his tattoos being some glowing neon-ish color).

For a sculpture that size, did you use some kind of wire armature? I'm trying to get into maquette sculpture, and while your project is probably a little big for me to tackle at the moment, someday I would like to sculpt busts this size.

I actually sculpted the big chap on a plastic human head/torso bust. It was wet clay for the blocking out stage and the sheer bulk, then plastiline over the top for all the surface details. If he had been a smaller one I would have made an armature from wire and Mod Roc. I normally for my smaller pieces use a combination of stiff wire, mod roc, tin foil and piece of wood. Tin foil is great for shaping out awkard shapes that you can't get with wooden pieces, then a few layers of mod roc to strengthen it up prior to adding the clay.

Interesting colour choice, I am considering running a few off and doing a few different looks for each. Develop each chap around it's own tribe/class category.
