Hey there, I was supposed to post this up forever and a day ago but just never got around to it, but here we go. This is my NCR Veteran Ranger costume, every bit of it was built by me and over the course of 4 years, this is its 4th incarnation and I think I've managed to get it pretty damn close to the in-game model. For now I'm going to post up the finished pictures, I'll update this tread with the working images etc once I'm back from a business flight this weekend. Please let me know what you think below and if there's specific areas in the build process you want to see first let me know.

This version of the helmet actually dates back a good few years. It started out as a pep build that I obviously cut out and glued together.

After that it was strengthens with fiberglass and filled out with bondo.

Now from this I made a silicone mould and cast the helmets out of resin. They did my great but after time I learned so many new techniques and gain so much experience in building that I had to go back because I wanted these helmets to be as close to the game version as humanly possible. I'm crazy about detail so I decided to go to town.

I took the a casting of the old helmet and used it as a base from which to modify, the basic shapes are all there but almost every surface of the helmet needed altering or rebuilding.

attachment.php

I started by altering the front air intake vents, before they stuck out too far and it was just a flat edge, I made it shallower and actually added the tapered edge that you see here. I then laid out the lines that would become the open areas that lets the air pass through.

The side AirVent on my old helmet used to be solid resin blocks that I would then stick on the side, I was not happy with that process and plus the vents looked wrong and were pretty ugly, so I completely rebuilt them using ingame pictures as reference and got them looking way more to what they should be. This vent would then be stuck on the master mould before casting so it becomes one solid unit with the helmet.

Next I began work on reconstructing all of the side and back surfaces of the helmet, making them far smoother, cleaner lines and more precise edges. Areas used to dip in too far on the old helmet, especially around the temples so that had to be fixed without fail.

Once that was done I then turned my attention to the left ear holes. I layer out guides for cutting lines so I could then etch into the surface and create the cavities that would then be cut out once the helmet was cast.

Next up comes a major part, modification of the entire left side of the helmet. As you can see from the image below, the left side on the old helmet was mis-shapen, the light mount and the ear socket never sat flush and was warped at an angle. The better box wasn't the right shape and overall it just didn't look like it does in the game version.

Below is what the left side no looks like after major reconstruction. The battery box has been corrected, side torch straightened and the ear socket has been completely reshaped and now sits in perfectly with the helmet. Much better.

My process at the time was creating a seam using modeling clay around the edge of the mask and helmet, now I'd do this as a matrix mold, buy hey, i was still learning at the time.

Once this was done i hand layered on the silicone using a thickening agent so i could get a good coverage without it all running on the floor. Again, this is not the way I would do it now but it served its purpose at the time.
