Rocket Raccoon - toddler style build

Hi all, just thought I'd start getting a build thread going.

Been toying with this idea for a while for my 18 month old daughter. I wanted to do a Rocket costume that was "toddler friendly" for Halloween. This is an in progress thread and I hope to be done before Halloween of course!

Anyways, onto the build!

Pandatrooper's 2014 Halloween Costume Contest Entry" - Toddler Rocket Raccoon

I did some quick sketches, just to figure out all the separate pieces.

I needed it to be comfortable, as we know toddlers can't really hold still. It needs to be soft and comfortable and easy to put on and take off. So I chose to use a furry jumper, with an orange t-shirt and pants overtop as a base for the "flight suit", then I would add all the details on top.

The head will be a hood, with ears on it and some cheek fur, and if she'll tolerate it, I'll paint her nose black and add some whiskers. She's only 19 months so no full coverage mask would be tolerated!

Furry jumper sourced from Sears

I didn't like any of the pre-made raccoon tails for costumes, so I sewed my own. Took 3 tries until I got the size I wanted (the one on the right). Our dog Mika wanted to inspect them, fake fur of course! I'm also hoping this costume will fit our dog - just for a few fun pics!

I scratch built the backpack from layers of EVA foam. I need to keep this soft, in case she falls or sits down. I didn't want anything heavy or that would pinch, so I went with a standard EVA foam. No templates really, just eye balled it.

The dome thing came from one of those toy dispenser machines. I'm painting the inside blue, and will put some flashy LED's inside.

Test fitting the tail and fur suit. Oh...Yeah...
IMG_20141021_081920.jpg

To make the black vest, I put on the fur suit and a placeholder onsie on top. Then covered the vest areas in masking tape. Drew out the patterns I wanted for the "leather armor" plates, or whatever they are.

This yields the pattern for the vest.

I had 2 scraps of this foamy material which is great for the vest. I went back to the fabric shop for more, but they had none left! So I had to squeeze in every piece. I just did some finished seams on the front visible areas, I figure the rest won't be that noticeable.

I had to sew in darts and contours to make sure the vest fits. Works great. I will do a running stitch up the back, but he back will close with velcro, in case she grows in a couple months - she could still squeeze into it for a convention, etc.

Not a lot of step by step pics, but I sewed the sternum straps and started the shoulder armor.

Re: "Pandatrooper's 2014 Halloween Costume Contest Entry" - Toddler Rocket Raccoon

I've cut out all the armor bits for the vest. heated the EVA foam and curved most of the pieces.

The armor looks like dark worn leather in most of the images when Rocket is in his orange suit. In the reddish Ravager suit, the armor looks more like black gunmetal. I have started painting the armor with acrylics. Just want to keep it softer looking and feeling.

I was considering coating the backpack with PVA and plasti-dip or Epsilon, but I decided to keep it soft and also not use spray paints in case it's too smelly for my daughter.
Just a primer coat in acrylic.

All leather armor plates no finished weathering, with about 6 separate layers of paint. Will seal it tomorrow.

Really happy with the worn leather look.
IMG_20141026_205144.jpg

Base colors finished on the backpack. Will weather it slightly and ad some highlights then seal it as well. Will add the dome and LED's last.

Unfortunately, the Nerf Rocket Racoon blaster isn't available in our neck of the woods, so I decided to make a small foam potted "Groot" for her to carry around, and maybe we can put candy in it!

Just some sketches and a head started in foam. I'm pretty sure she'll drop it so I can't use anything like hard clay or Sculpey etc.

Finished weathering all the foam "leather" parts

Very pleased with the detail of the weathering

Finished sewing the ears and airbrushed them brown and black. ai

Finished assembling pack and tail. I added a strobing LED in the dome, I assume this is some kind of mount or charge port for Rocket's gun when it's stowed on his back.

Smallest knee pads ever! I sewed quilted foam, and sewed on grippy elastic, and added the knee armor to the side.

Not a lot of step by steps, but I made the Baby Groot from aluminum wire, a yogurt container, electrical cord shielding, and EVA foam.

Finished Baby Groot! The pot has an EVA foam edge, easier for baby to carry. Painted with acrylics.

My dog Mika (a Shiba Inu - yes, the "Doge" breed) goes in for an inspection. Always take the time to stop and smell the Groot...

Fantastic build! The finished product speaks for itself, and your daughter is just too cute. The dog is what really puts it over the edge though :lol. Great job, and awesome parenting.

Do you still have this costume? I'd love to buy it from you if you do
