Hey all-
We're big Dr. WHO fans at our house (especially the newer incarnation). The wife put together a viewing party for the new season and asked if I'd create something we could take pictures with. Originally she requested an oversized airbrush pic (subject matter to TBD) but I thought we could be a little more "sophisticated".
Of course, my ambition (and time) are always a little bigger than reality...
Starting at 8:00 pm Friday night, sketched the dimensions on a piece of pink 4" x 10" sheet of insulation on the family room floor (while my daughter and I watched an episode of DS9)
After both kids were in bed, began cutting door panels and attaching accent pieces. Progress at about 12:30 Friday night
Pink foam doesn't hold it's own weight very well, so the back is reinforced with 1x2 firing strips. They're glued to the back then secured with wood screws. I used remnants of styrene to keep the screw heads from popping through the insulation and to distribute the tension on the screws. The "tiered" piece is a single piece of foam shaped with a palm sander (very messy process).
Police Box "marquee" added and a single wood strip to act as the door stop on the front (also adds rigidity to the piece). Door step added to the bottom. Progress as of 2:45 am.
First couple of coats of blue paint added, then exhaustion/common sense kicks in and I go to bed. Status as of 4:30 am
My eyes pop open about 7:30 am Saturday morning -I have roughly 11 hours to complete the TARDIS before the party starts and 11 and a half hours before the episode airs. Snap a quick pic of the TARDIS with the paint dry before I get back to work. Status as of 9:00 am Saturday morning.
Cut the plexiglass for the two windows and the Police Box sign and attached to the back of the TARDIS. Time 11:30 am
Created the window "panes" out of a couple of cardboard cereal boxes and painted. Also created the phone box door (it's not functional but will be made so later) and got them assembled. Time: Saturday 1:30 pm (3 and 1/2 hours till the party)
Got on the computer and created the Phone Box instructions (not pictured) and created stencils for the Police Box Marquee. Painted and attached styrene trim to the Marquee plexi. Used an Exacto knife to cut out the letters and adhere them to the rear of the Marquee. Time 3:20 pm (approximately 90 minutes till the party).
Airbrushed the back of the Marquee in black paint, removed the lettering and added a added white. Took the airbrush out to the garage and misted the back of the door windows with white paint (not pictured). Current time: 4:30 pm.
Ran out of time to take pictures....
Affixed the Police Telephone sign to the door and sealed it with Modge Podge. Created a styrene "lock", sprayed it with metallic paint and hot-glued it to the door. Ran a Christmas light rope through the Marquee box and affixed the plexi marquee to the front. Built holders for the rope light around the door windows and mounted the lights. Hot-glued and screwed the phone door and front door handles in place and brought the entire facade into the house (with the help of the wife and kids). Time 5:30 pm (the black t-shirt I'm wearing is sopping wet -it was 98F outside and about 95F in the garage).
While I was working on the TARDIS the wife was prepping the food:
Jammy Dodgers (sp?)
Fish fingers and custards and other Dr. WHO-themed foods that I forgot the names of...
5:55 pm -TARDIS setup and lights turned on (and I'm freshly showered -long overdue).
And a few pics from the get-together:
TARDIS cake (brought by one of the guests)
A couple of table center pieces (for atmosphere )
The kids make duct tape bow ties:
Watching the show:
what we thought of the new episode/new Doctor
Group shots with the TARDIS
...parting shot for the day
I fell asleep as soon as the guests left, but it was totally worth it.
Thanks for looking.
