A while ago a friend of mine bought a payphone and asked me to light it up like the prop in the Bill and Ted movies. Here's how I went about it.
After determining if it was even possible to get to the buttons I disassembled the phone and cast the star and pound keys in clear resin.
I then tossed together a quick blinker circuit from a 555 timer and some warm white LEDs.
I drilled holes through the internal keypad, mounted the LEDs and reattached the phone internals to the enclosure.
A contact switch hot glued to the back of the receiver lever triggers the lights when the handset is picked up.
Finally I painted the symbols onto the clear buttons.
Here's a video of the finished prop:
Party on dudes!
